Travelling with 3 Guns to South Africa
My son (grown) & I are going to S. Africa in 2010 for a plains game hunt.

Advice needed:

We'll be carrying 3 rifles (Dulles to Johannesberg - using the services of an expediter on arrival & departure from Johannesberg)) for the safari; ALL OF WHICH HAVE 4457'S IN MY NAME.

FROM THOSE THAT KNOW - WOULD THERE ANY PROBLEMS WITH THE ABOVE? For airline purposes my son would carry one rifle & myself the remaining two. TSA & SAP - AS STATED ABOVE ALL THREE RIFLES HAVE 4457'S IN MY NAME.

ALL CONSTRUCTIVE/LEGAL/PROBLEM FREE SUGGESTIONS ARE WELCOME.

If all the 4457 forms are in your name then all three firearms will need to be licensed under your name in South Africa. They must all three be of different calibers. You can't license two guns of the same caliber to one person.

Why not get new 4457's with two guns in your name and one gun in your son's name? This should erase any questions.

Stonecreek & Graybird,

Thanks for the suggestion. I knew the 4457's were good for lifetime but I just viewed the Customs Border Patrol website & discovered that the forms are not recorded.

I regularly travel there with three handguns and have never had a problem.

That said, a new 4457 for one of the guns in your son's name is easy to do and would remove any nagging doubts you might have. I wish all travel risks were as easy as that to deal with.

When you get bored with life, start hunting dangerous game with a handgun.

I do it every year with no problems. We just returned with 2 rifles, 1 shotgun each.

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

You could always get a 4457 in you sons name.

I cannot remember exactly how many rifles one person can take legally out/bring back into the US.

I have taken out 2 rifles, a Drilling, and a handgun one time, the wife had 2 rifles and a Drilling as well.

When we got back into the USA the Customs guy asked "Do you have anything to declare?" I replied "NO". He said "Welcome back to America", and waived us through. Eeker

I have had my guns checked each time in SA and Zim getting the proper perments, but my other bags have never even been looked at.

How old is your son? Age limits in gun registration in SA does matter.
I met a family in Zim one year that had to leave a rifle in SA that was registered in his minor sons name. When I took my kids I put all my guns in my name. Safestr way.
