Just bought a new Pelican 1750 two rifle case. I am about to embark on the adventure of laying out the design and cutting the foam. Just looking for input or considerations before I make the first cut. It will house a scoped bolt rifle and my double. I am interested on your thoughts of how I should place them from the perspective of the case being in the "carry" position. Bolt gun right side up with the double laying "upside down" along the bottom of the case? Extra cut so that the bolt can be removed and housed seperately? Double rifle broken down? Anything else that you house in the rifle case for travel? I can comfortably fit the rifles with several inches of pad between them and several inches to the edges of the case.

Just wondering what you all have done that works (or didn't). Thanks, JCS

I would prefer the double rifle be broken down.

I would want the bolt rifle to have the scope up toward the carrying handle.

If I did remove the bolt from the rifle I would want it in a slot where it cannot fall out when the case is opened or get loose in the case from rough handling.

After trying several differant cases I settled on a smaller Pelican case. I break my rifles down and pack in soft cases. They come in handy in the hunting trucks. The smaller case works well going aroud the airports and in a bush plane. It also weighs less, so I can pack a few more items in it and still make weight.

I would definitely make a cut-out for the bolt removed from the rifle. Also, make sure that your guns are oriented so that the serial numbers are facing upward, visible without removing the gun from the case. If you get it reversed with only one gun it's easy to flip the foam over to correct...but if one is reversed to the other you'll kick yourself every time you are asked to remove the gun to display the serial number.

There are small plastic cases made that will hold the bolt securely. Thet are only slightly larger than the bolt and protect your rifle from a bolt that comes out of the cutout. Simply make a cutout to fit the plastic box.

All good points. I've never seen the "bolt box", but it makes a lot of sense. A loose bolt can do a lot of damage. With a Tuff-Pak, I put the rifles in sift cases. As Llarrys01 mentioned, they are needed anyway on the hunting vehicle or on small plane charters. If I bring a double and breakdown bolt rifles (Blaser or Sauer 202), I use the short Pelican case, and fold the gun slips in with my luggage.

A loose bolt totally destroyed the stock on a rifle of mine so a seperate bolt box is good advise indeed.

Not a Pelican, but I use an SKB with the center divider removed, pack rifles IN THEIR SOFT CASES (which you need anyway), and pad them with t-shirts, underwear, etc. until nothing moves.

No problem making weight.

Another tip: put a copy of the applicable 4457s in the gun case, it's a real handy place to carry them and it's right there when you need them.

Also, make sure your name, address, cell #, and itinerary are in the gun case.

Great idea about the soft cases, I have been considering doing it that way.

I also just set my Stormcase up using a 5.11 zippered case so I didnt have to re cut my foam which was originally cut for two Custom Hill Country Rifles in 375 H&H & 416 Rem. My two newest rifles (Searcy 470 Nitro & Ruger 416 Alaskan) wouldnt fit so rather than buy new foam I opted on the soft case and it worked pretty slick.

Be sure to save the foam inserts. You can put them back in, swap the cut up piece of foam with the old top piece, and have a fresh piece of foam to cut up for a different rifle combo that you might want to travel with in the future.
