I am having a custom revolver made by Hamilton Bowen. A part of the project is ivory grips. The grip maker I spoke to (and was referred to by Hamilton) stated he buys ivory from hunters and as long as they keep a copy of their import info its no problem. I would do a search for custom grip makers, contact them and shop around for the best offer...........JJ

You can give it away but you cannot legally sell it.

You can sell legally taken Ivory in the USA. All Ivory today is stamped with a reg. number, if it's older, you need the export permit to sell it. But it can be sold!!!thumb

There's a guy in New England that buys it, gives a fair price for it, his name is Allen. If you want to sell any PM me I'll look up his number.
It can not be exported.

Don't believe me. Call up US Fish and Wildlife and ask them.

I would delete your post before it is seen by F&W if I was you. Selling Ivory that has been taken since the ban in the early 90's is taboo. Because someone will buy does not make it legal.

Pre ban Ivory is okay if you have the documentation.

If you want to sell it to help pay for the hunt do so before it enters the US.

You need to read the entire document.

"What African Elephant Ivory Can I
Import Into the United States?

Raw ivory cannot be imported into the
United States except as a personal
sport-hunted trophy with appropriate
CITES permits. The ivory of sporthunted
trophies cannot be re-exported
or sold within the United States as
conditioned under a CITES import
permit. Contact this office for a fact
sheet on African elephant sport-hunted
trophies."

Call your local USFWS office in the morning and see what they say.

Regards,

Terry

DrB,

I was wrong. After reading Terrys post I called the guy making my grips. He is on the west coast so he wasn't in bed yet. He told me all the major grip makers use only pre-89 import ivory ONLY. Ivory cannot be sold in the US now, period. He is inspected by USFW and must provide documention as to the source of his ivory.

Keep your ivory and enjoy it, if caught selling it jail time and a large fine are possible. Sorry for steering you wrong...........JJ

If you don't want to keep it make a detour on your back to the US and sell it in Hong Kong or Japan.

Legally or otherwise, you can sell it just about anytime you want to....just don't expect to get rich off of the sale. Mammoth ivory has hurt the value of elephant ivory to some extent.

After all, it isn't exactly a burning issue and one pre-89 document can cover a lot of ivory, so I hear.

To be clear, I don't buy, sell, or own any elephant tusks.

When considering US based operations of guides/outfitters, check and see if they are NRA members. If not, why support someone who doesn't support us? Consider spending your money elsewhere.

NEVER, EVER book a hunt with BLAIR WORLDWIDE HUNTING or JEFF BLAIR.

I have come to understand that in hunting, the goal is not the goal but the process.

To anyone wanting to sell ivory in the USA, I just got back from Newark airport, (picking up some trophies). While at USF&WS I asked about selling ivory, they told me, QUOTE: " If someone wants to sell elephant tusks(ivory) from sport hunted trophies they have to call USF&WS, each case is a one on one, they will approve selling it."

Ex:If Joe X goes to Africa shoots a Elephant, comes back to the states expecting to sell it to help pay for the hunt, ILLEGAL!!!!!

Now, if Joe D has Ivory thats been lying around the house for years and he's selling all his mounts, or a death in the family and no one wants to keep it, or maybe a divorce and it has to go! They said they would ok it.

So if you want to sell ivory call USF&WS!!!
