Subj: Jet Blue Pilot kidnapped in Africa
Sat, Jun 16, 2012
JetBlue Pilot Kidnapped And Held In Africa Released After Being Held For Eight Days In A Village In Benin A JetBlue pilot was recently abducted in Africa and held for eight days in a village in Benin before being released, according to authorities from the West African nation.
K. Shawn Bischoff of Fort Lauderdale, FL, who JetBlue confirms works for the airline, had traveled to Africa to "conclude a commercial transaction for gold" with individuals who had solicited him on the Internet. When he arrived in Africa, he was abducted and held until being recognized at a border crossing eight days later.
Bischoff's captors demanded ransom payments from his parents, making unspecified threats against him, according to Benin police spokesman Florent Djimasse. The South Florida Sun Sentinal reports that as authorities got closer to the kidnappers, they apparently panicked, an put him in a cab to be taken to Lome`, where he had first arrived in Africa. Police recognized Bischoff at the border. He was freed, and the four kidnappers with him were arrested.
Police in Benin say the investigation is continuing, but Djimasse reportedly had harsh words for the people living in the village where Bischoff was being held. He chastised them for not reporting a white person being held hostage there, saying it could not have gone unnoticed by everyone.
U.S. and African authorities are not releasing further details of the incident, though the State Department and the FBI are both reportedly involved in the investigation.
No place is safe if you are as stupid as this guy. I don't think I will ever fly JetBlue again.
STAY IN THE FIGHT!

Actually, NYC is quite safe these days. In fact, it's the world's first police state, what with all the cops and cameras everywhere. And if you are, in fact, a petty criminal and get caught in the act of ... say ... selling cigarettes on the street, it's not out of the realm of possibility that you will be beaten to death by a jack-booted, para-military unit - eight or ten men strong ... and all in the name of law and order.
The real criminals, however, the world's most dangerous criminals (the Wall Street Guys) still walk free.
But you're right about one thing: You will get robbed (by the Wall Street Guys) - and you don't even have to live in NYC - or even visit it!

Not necessarily "in the name of law and order" but more in the name of NY collecting the horrible tax they impose on the sale of cigarettes. Can't have some poor guy on the street corner selling untaxed smokes.

True enough. It might bring down the whole economy.

Those cops aren't like Obama where they get to disregard laws passed by our lawmakers 'cause they just don't like 'em.......

For once I'd like to see some inside trader ... or especially a few of those who were responsible for the 2007/8 meltdown ... get taken down, choke-holded, hand-cuffed and stomped by a SWAT team ... right there on the steps of the NYSE.
Now that would be something to see.

Reagan and Bush prosecuted over 1000 individuals as a result of the savings and loan crisis, getting 839 convictions.
Since then, no one has gone to jail. For all the hand wringing Obama does over the GFC, he has failed to send anyone to jail - or even try.
Tropic-Hunter it was The Dodd-Frank Act that forced banks to repackage home shit-loans they were forced to make to those wholly unable to repay. The banks repackaged them and sold them as A+ bonds. Your politicians at their finest.

Don't forget up front the GREEDY Mortgage Brokers, who were slathering themselves with huge salaries and bonuses while committing FRAUD on the buyers of new mortgages....some of which were getting BIGGER with every payment....because the monthly payments were set so low they didn't cover interest, let alone principle!!...coupled with NO QUALIFICATION as to ability to pay back!! GO FIGURE...a money SCAM fraught with FAILURE...and it cost us ALL!!
Cheers,

How was this thread ever about how safe Benin is in the first place?
470: the fault lies of both sides of the table when it comes to mortgages. I own a lot of rental properties that gives me a lens into the financial history and decision making of lots of people. The average person in America can't do basic math - to wit, your complaint that they were screwed by mortgage brokers. Or my other favorite: refinancing to take money out of a house to spend it on something to keep up with the Joneses, like say, a markhor hunt.

AZ Writer- you are a numbers type with expereince in making rentals pencil....not everyone is!! Example, nurses working for my wife...in hot and rising real estate market...upbringing here in US always teaches that your HOUSE IS YOUR CASTLE and always stretch to make the best investment in your life!! Well, they were following their upbringing...and they are medical/scientific people....working with "trusted Bankers who are supposed to be honest and forthright people- ie PROFESSIONALS!" HA....they were self serving greedy Buggers.....bound for their bigger bonuses and the Demos had made sure there were NO QUALIFICATION barriers for mortgagees!! WHACK, the deed was done....and the trap set for catastrophic failure....and DODD-FRANK was the lynch pin....and the dominoes set to fall....and the rest is history!! This deviation was all related to financial scams the pilot got into in the Benin story I posted...it was a SPOOF anyway....
