30ott6 and I are each taking a tuffpak; and, each putting an '06 and a 375 H&H into our individual Tuffpak's. Now, since regulations only allow two rifles per case, we bought a third. The plan is to each put a shotgun into the third case and one of our wives will carry it as one of her two pieces of allowed "luggage".

Now, I wonder what happens when we get into SA and/or Namibia and my wife has the tuffpak with two shotguns, but I have a 4457 listing one shotgun and 30ott6 has another 4457 listing the other. Are we asking for problems? If so, please offer solutions.

You'll probably be alright but I'd have the wife bring her own 4457 for two shotguns. Airline employees don't always know their own rules.

BTW I was told that the case may contain two rifles or two shotguns. I asked if I could have two rifles and one shotgun in my tuffpak and was told YES!!!!!

My friend and I did something similar. We put our shotguns in a separate two gun case. When we picked up the guns at JoBerg and likewise at JFK, I transferred mine to a softcase to go through customs and then back into the hard case after clearing. Note however that was pre 9/11 and unlike your Tuffpak I had to retrieve a soft case from my duffle bag and transfer a gun "in the open" into and out of the soft case. Take the advice about having the shotguns "registered" (Form 4457) in your wife's name. Path of least resistance.

That however may open a can of worms vis a vie the South African requirement of having a gun "permit" from your destination state (Namibia). Make sure the wife has one for "her" shotguns also.

The easiest route if you need to take your shotgun would be to carry them in single cases as extra baggage under your name(s).

The easiest route if you aren't married to taking your shotgun is to borrow one from the PH.

Alas "they" never make it easy.
