My friend wants to book a Buffalo Sable Hunt with Lunwire Safaris in Mozambique. They hunt the Lugenda Wildlife Reserve. I believe it is in the north of the country in the Niassa area.

Has anyone hunted with Lunwire? the Niassa region with another outfitter? Any details on hunting terrain, trophy export, etc. anything on Mozambique would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike

Tradewinds- I am not familiar with them but as to trophy export, Moz is pretty rough. My animals have been exported to Zim and that was a major cluster . So much so that I would have to be assured of a very new and different system before hunting Moz again. If you don't want your trophies, no big deal. I am now dealing with Taxidermy Enterprises and they have been very good in comparison. Many of the areas in Moz are run by non-residents. You do want to find out what kind of presence your operator has there.I have a sense that "When the cats away that those Moz mice do play".

Last year, I had lunch with a guy in Jo'burg who was on his 14th safari. He was hunting elephant with Luwire. I believe he had hunted Niassa with them previously. He was complimentary of Luwire. He shot a 100 pounder (one tusker). The US doesn't allow import of ivory from Moz, so Luwire is storing his ivory until it is importable.

As to the trophy shipment, I have heard that there is now one or two trophy export companies in Moz. But we would need more current information to see if that has solved the problem Crane experienced.

Here's some info:

Niassa Reserve Website This is really slow to load.

Johan Calitz hunts Niassa and there is some info on his website.

Luwire

Luwire Safaris

African Indaba go here and download the November-December 2004 issue. Item 14 in the newsletter has some good info on hunting Niassa.

I believe it is a bit of an issue to get there. Requires flying into Pemba (northern Mozambique coastal town) and overnighting before chartering into camp.

We had knowledge of the new exporter but there was no track record to look at and our company(MacDonald) used there regular system through Zim. I think trophy care up on the plateau is a much easier proposition than on the Zambezi flood plain largely due to much lower humidity.

tradewinds,

I believe as in all bookings you first need to look at a company with a solid reputation, a significant presence in their hunt area with full time anti-poaching and an interest in taking stewardship of the hunting area.

We work with such a company with a long track record of happy clients going back to'79. Your friend will have to work for his trophies but a sable and buff plus some unique species can be had on a 15 day schedule for $800 per day.

They also offer plains game hunts to include sable for $500 per day on a 10 day schedule. This will be a tracking hunt in basically a milion acres of wilderness. This could be a very challenge and rewarding hunt as opposed to a drive by which many sable hunts are.

Contact me anytime for more details.

Luwire are top notch and very professional. Main PH's Jamie Wilson (ex - Zambia) and Derek Littleton (ex-Zim). Wonderful remote area.

They are top notch I know many people who book have hunted with them, I myself am booked for 08.

Their booking agent is one of the best and handles a tremendous about of the Dallas Sarfari Club's business.

Have a look at T. Carr's post above entitled Come and have a Drink. This hotel is owned by the same people that own Luwire Safaris. This will give you an idea of how they operate.

JTHunt,

have you hunted with Lunwire? Jamie Wilson? THe Hotel looks nice, they give you discounted rates if you are hunting and encourage you to try the Hotel. I am told the hotel concession, etc. is owned by a Saudi so I guess money is no object.

Lightning,

What booking agent are you using?

Anyone know why is it more people do not hunt Mozambique?
