I really think this is an opportune time for us hunters to start our own Lion charity and I am sure every operator in Africa would contribute something?

Funds could be dedicated to research and those whom have proved to help protect these beasts.

We need to kick this little British charity LionAid into touch.

Almost 1 million acres, and the crazies seem to think all the animals are being killed near the fence.

Someone should create a LyingAid Facebook page or something very similar. That way all the people who had their posts deleted can post on this page and hopefully visitors to the other Facebook page can see it.

Totally agree - with the "let's restore some sense" part at the beginning.

Firstly, "buying and introducing" wildlife is not a bad thing, to wit, Pilanesberg and Madikwe in South Africa, both of which are fenced, as all parks in South Africa have to be. And yes, to buy these things, one must be "wealthy".

Secondly, 13 lions were"purposely" bought - not really the thing one does by accident, "Oh honey, I went shopping and accidentally bought 13 lions" - in 1999, and a further 4 came in that year. 13 + 4 = 17. Nit-picking? Yes, but if the whole point is being factual...

Thirdly, OK Paul Trethowan and Byron Du Preez, the Oxford lion researchers (at doctoral level) are not anti-hunting. And SCI and DSC have factored in for financial support. The money has to come from somewhere, it's just that simple.

Fourthly, Bubye Valley now has, say, 500 lions. They started with 17. Again, a little simple arithmetic, 500 - 17 = 483. And one fact which LionAid conveniently makes no mention at all of is that Bubye Valley has THE WORLD'S THIRD-LARGEST POPULATION OF BLACK RHINOS. And they're stupid enough to state "A private fenced hunting reserve in Zimbabwe can hardly claim to play a role in wildlife conservation". Black rhinos are far more critically endangered than lions, so they really need to re-examine their thinking big time. Bubye Valley requires a heavily-armed anti-poaching team and all the ancillary infrastructure to protect the rhinos...and the lions. That costs money. Bubye Valley is now embarking on a pioneer program of training tracker dogs, which will also be used in other parts of the country. Again, the money has to come from somewhere.

Protect the lions, by all means, we all want that. It's called "sustainability", and yeah, they're LIONAid. But the whole concept of "Lion Lives Matter" becomes as ridiculous as its American primogenitor when it is at the exclusion of other species like rhinos.

ALL lives matter, which brings us to...oh yeah, the money has to come from somewhere. If the money is currently coming from sport hunting they need to remember, if they close it down the responsibility for making up the shortfall lies with those who created it. Trouble is, the antis are big on agendas and not so big on the concept of responsibility.

Lion Aid is first and foremost a fraud and front to extract money from well meaning people.

one of its main benefactors is a research prostitute who got his doctorate in maggot biology but with a Dr. In front of his name brings the credibility to the forum, the same individual threw his then girlfriend out his vehicle in an area known for crime where she was brutally raped, he crashed his vehicle while very drunk placing many innocent lives at risk , he will put his name to the cause paying the most money and once was a hunting industry consultant who was discharged for jeopardizing critical lion survey data . He turned on the hunting industry as his lucrative consulting business fell apart. He was excluded from all government sponsored predator research workshops , but the Dr. gives him the credibility to mislead the general public.

I have posted a link to Lion Aid's financial statements here before and if memory serves me they had a budget of around $30-35,000. They couldn't finance a used car.

Lion Aids is all hat and no cattle.

And that's the short version of Mr. lyingaid!! He's totally discredited in the scientific community, and was kicked out of Botswana years and years ago - as Graeme here obviously knows.

This link explains the 2015 poaching stats for the Lowveld.

http://www.lowveldrhinotrust.o...-jan-2016/4591465683

Because of the advances made by conservancies like Bubye Valley, the fate of the rhinos and the fate of the lions are irrevocably linked.

Very interesting. Is there an explanation why the ratio of poaching in other areas became substantially lower compared to the lowveld region. Does the sixe of the populations play a role or are the lowveld areas more accessible to the poachers. Any other reasons?

Just a guess, but I'm going to say much higher population densities in the conservancies.
