Which rifle for elephant

Im planning an elephant hunt later this year, i have narrowed it down to one of 2 rifles im am thinking of taking. one a custom crown weatherby mark v in 460 wby.....or my soon to arrive custom built german mark v in 375wby. The 460 obviously has the extra stopping power.......but im so looking forward to my 375......this is the timber on the 375

Personally I would not use either, but if those were the only two choices, I would go with the .460 Wby.

The 460 will stop any ele, however I would slow it down to 2500fps less chamber pressure and if hunting in high heat Case sticking is a possibility. I would not that in the back of my mind.
The 375wby is similiar to a 375RUM which also has a lot of velocity, but put a 350gr solid it will be really be an execellent ele rifle.

thanks mate, why do you say about the case sticking in heat.I shoot a lot here in aus over 45 degrees and never had a prob. is there something i should be looking out for?

My choice would be the left blank (nice lines for the sharp recoil of a 374Wetherby). This blank is similar to my own used on a 458.
Calibre wise, I would normally say +40cal but this year Ill be likely taking at 375F myself. For me this decision depends greatly on time of season and location.

oz no those blacks are not vardeys. i just wanna hunt with that new 375...........but i wanna no how comfortable people are at using them on elephant

Have you decided on an area and what time of year and will you be after a Bull or Cow?

There's a heck of a difference between early and late season,Hunting and choice of weapon. In fact a PH once advised against early season hunting of Tuskless and a friend since vowed never to enter the Jesse for Elephant again.

Hey Sav, Gordy never told me you got that blank on the left. I got the one from the slab next to it for my custom .240 Weatherby.

Ross Waghorn described it as one of the best blanks he's ever had the pleasure of working.

I have shot all my elephants with a 375, except two.
One with a 416 Weatherby, one with a 416 Rigby improved.

Go ahead and hunt with your 375.

Just place teh bullet in the right place, and your elephant will know what had hit him.

Early season Cow Ele hunt = close quarters combat with multiple defensive cows and often shooting through thick foliage with high chance of defensive shooting .
Late season Bull= likely single or small group of Bulls in "generally" more open ground providing easier stalking and shooting opportunity's.

thanks saeed. i will be hunting mozambique in october by the way. i know quite a few ozzies hunting cape buff and elephant this year.....im not sure whats going on

N E 450 No2

I would sell both of those Weatherbys, and get a good double in 450 Nitro, and shoot them elephants at 10 yards or less...

Mikes double is a 450 No2 Famars, I have shot it and it is a nice rifle.

It is Almost as nice as my 450 No2.

its a few years away mate.....ready to do the big five with my then 13 year old.

mylittle b loke has been once to africa and i want to go with him to do the big 5 and for him at that age to shoot a few species as well

Now there's some good advice!! But I would suggest 500NE.

BTW, Ozhunter has it exactly correct in defining the difference between early season cow in the jesse and late season bulls in the open. There is a huge difference.

I never saw a need for a rifle for elephant. In fact, I don't even own a rifle. Did this guy at 12 yards in full charge just fine. .416 Taylor Encore.
