I love going to the Dallas show and any show involving hunting, fishing, shooting.

A pet peeve that is beginning to eat a hole in me is this - I walked past (note "passed") several booths that had a banner saying -

COME EXPERIENCE THE BEST (FILL IN THE BLANK) HUNTING IN AFRICA/TEXAS/WHEREVER.

In particular, a couple said - best kudu hunting anywhere, or , biggest/best whitetail hunting anywhere.

For some reason, I am so sick and tired of anything or anyone claiming to be the "best". Whether it is a rifle or bullet or hotel or fishing spot or whatever.

I feel that I am being scammed and lied to BEFORE I ever talk to them or enter the booth.

Reason - it is a calculated mis-truth to get my money. It is a lie and deception.

Does this bother you or do you just roll with the flow?

I may getting too old and have been fooled a few too many times, but I am getting less and less tolerant of any promise/guarantee that is fake.

A friend came over this afternoon.

He has several business.

And all over very good services.

We use them all the time because of this.

He always said they offer the best service they can.

Never the best service around.

Completely agree as well.

Any booth with that display, I pass by without a second thought. As a general rule, I believe anyone who feels the need to tell you or advertise they are the best is a big red flag. Winners act like they’ve been there before without needing to tell you all about it.

100%. Nothing sets off my BS detector more than than the "we are the best there is" type of claim.

Another claim that sets off my alarm is the claim of 100% success rates.

There is salesmanship, which is fine, as long as it's honest, and then there is BS, which I despise.

I'm equally peeved by posters who ask something like "What Is the Best Caliber for Whitetails?", or "This Is the Best Powder for the .308", or "Where Is the Best Place to Hunt Mule Deer?".

This concept of "best" is more often a matter of preference or prejudice that one of fact.

I agree that someone who represents their service or product as "The Best" is engaging in hyperbole and typically has no tangible evidence to support that claim.

"THE BEST' gets people's attention so outfitters continue to use it.

I'd rather say " X,Y,Z is the best I've ever seen" OR "X,Y,Z MAYBE the best". When you say flat out THE BEST your setting yourself up for trouble. And as stated earlier one person's best maybe another's not so hot.

Use Enough Gun

The phrase: "The Best" pervades all aspects of life and every business. Just like using the words" monster or trophy deer, monster or trophy trout, monster or trophy bull elk, etc. etc. etc. Long before it became overused, overrun and commonplace, Browning Arms Company trade named: "The Best There Is".

But, other societal phrases are just as bad. Let's see, let's try: racist, extremist, extreme, far left, far right, hate-filled, hatred.....You get the picture.

We live in a world where the meaning of many words has no longer, any real meaning, in the realm of truth today.

I seen that old movie with kevin Costner and his partners where they ride into town and whoop ass all over the place.

they used to be called drifters, in one preview,, and then later cowboy's.
this description labeled them as cow herders.

I guess one of them could have been a girl, and she just happened to be the best cow herder on the range... hell I dunno.

I still take your point 100%, despite allowing myself to be baited down this sidetrack by an apparent victim of morphology.

I have two hunts planned for this year, both with new outfitters to me, and both based on educated trust.

I hope better educated than my last one. You pay your money and you take your chances.

But like you, I try to keep my BS detector highly tuned. Sadly, in spite of my best efforts, it still fails now and again.
