I just watched a video that showed a hunt in the C.A.R.

They were hunting Bongo but the pygmy trackers called in Blue Duikers with a "wounded Duiker" call.

The little antelope came right in.

Is this trick used in other parts of Africa for other duikers species, or is it a regional thing?

I hunted with a p.h. in 1999 who had a pet duiker at home.He would call them up to the truck every night as we drove back from the bush.

Cry 'Havoc,' and let slip the dogs of war;
That this foul deed shall smell above the earth
With carrion men, groaning for burial.

Where were you hunting?

What country? What kind of duiker?

I have seen it done on Grey (aka Common) Duiker and Red Duiker. Both times in KZN province South Africa.

I have stopped duiker running with a hand-mouth scream call but this works on many other species too.

Yes, it is easy to do. A mouth blown rabbit squealer works fine, will call in duikers and nyala and what ever else is in hearing range.

Ann,

While calling a "hurt rabbit distress call" I've had a number of common grey duiker come charging in. It's the first time I heard tha nyala would come and investigate such sounds too. I'd like to know more about the circumstances, nyala male or female? Did it come charging in as if bent on rescue, like I know duiker do?

Anyone, particularly the regular varmint callers, what other antelope or animals come to investigate?

In good hunting,

Andrew McLaren

I've used the same caller on both red and grey duiker, bushbuck, nyala, jackal, wild dog & reedbuck.... seems to work best on the wild dog and red duiker. Wink

Andrew,

It was a female nyala with her large calf. They did charge in fast.

Here at home I've called in 50 head of cattle, horses, house cats, neighbor's dogs, deer and probably a few other animals I never saw.
