My eye Dr. Who is a veTy accomplished archery hunter here in Colorado called to ask where he should go for an African bow hunt, primarily plains game. He wishes to spend his time stalking and tracking rather than sitting over water or bait. In addition, after the hunt he would be taking his family on a photographic safari. They would fly in and meet him after his hunt was over, so changing countries is an option he said. I don't bow hunt, so not really current on what is available. Thanks guys.

Try Limcroma Safari. I hunted with them twice and it was over water holes and bait. But I believe they will do spot and stalk if that's what you want to do.
It will be a heck of a challenge to get in bow range of most of those animals.

We were within bow range of several animals we took in Namibia with Shona Adventures, although it was the 9,3X62 that did the speaking.

It would be far more helpful to your friend if he could identify a few of the species he would like to go after.

Namibia is only an option if you wish to sit in a hide. Game densities are very low and walk and stalk will not be a good option there unless he is happy to go home empty handed.

Most places in SA do not cater to the walk and stalk bow hunter due to the fact that they want to shoot a lot of animals in the shortest time possible.

Ideally he is going to need thick bush to use for cover and at least 2 weeks to get to know the game patterns and get himself into positions that may yield a shot.

I suggest using a Ghillie and or Leafy suit and possibly one of those "blinds" that mount to the front of the bow like the turkey hunters use.

A piece of good camo net used as an impromptu hide also works well.

If he can send more info we can make better suggestions.

As for the photo Safari how much luxury do you want and are you looking for maximum number of top photos or would you like to tour around taking in the country side with photos as a nice extra.

Some places are going to give you 4 of the big 5 every day, some places will do that in 2 weeks.

Cheers
Ian

There are plenty of reputable bowhunting outfits in both SA and Namibia. There is even some opportunity in the Save, were your liable to see the big 5 too.

The stalking part might be a problem though. Most don't cater to that.

The best source I have found for bowhunting Africa is on "bowsite" they have a whole section dedicated to it and its very active.

I have walked in the foot prints of the elephant, listened to lion roar and met the buffalo on his turf. I shall never be the same.

I recommend putting him in touch with Bow Hunting Safari Consultants and Neil Summers. I was in the same boat and he helped put together a hunt for me in Botswana (obviously no longer an option). The hunter probably won't get the same number of trophies, but in my opinion, experience much more of a hunt.

I agree. Most of the Spot and Stalk is in heavy cover and it is VERY difficult to get a clear shot. You also need to consider the time of year. With or without leaves on the Flora.

Makalaan Safaris is a great bow hunting outfit which caters to bow hunters and can do spot and stalk or in blinds. Their prices are very reasonable and you will not find a better value for the money with absolutely reputable people. Antonie and Melinda Louw own and operate the ranch. Plenty of Zebra, gemsbok, impala, waterbuck, hartebeest,Eland and Kudu, and giraffe, wart hogs suffered some from the past droughts but are coming back

It's been more than 10 years ago but I had an absolute blast bow hunting with Mokore Safaris in the Save. A close friend bow hunted their Mozambique concession and took a 59" Kudu. Great people, worth talking to.
