donner,

See item #6 in the link concerning South Africa leopards from the current CITES meeting taking place.

Hope this is of some use.

It is true, no permits were allocated to any of the provinces, the reason is unknown at this stage. It might be that they must first finalise the system as per the CITES document #6 and the quotas will be allocated later. Typical of Africa, things are done without giving a reason as to why.

I posted two weeks ago on the "Hunts Offered" section.

The word is that CITES is not happy with the hunt return forms from some of the provinces. They were incomplete.

Jaco, they cannot comment because if they say something wrong it can be held against them in a court case. And I personaly think there are some sinister forces at play behind the scenes here. These anti's are now coming with a MASSIVE campaign against our beloved way of life.

Are you a member of PHASA? Do you get the news letters? Also, I see you are still registered in Limpopo. Maybe join the Limpopo Hunters Liaison Forum? Then you will be very well informed about what is going on, and the history of this whole issue. For only R550.00 annual membership fees you get updated news feeds, and local organisation fighting for your business IN LIMPOPO. email me if you want more detail.

It is now confirmed that there will be no 2016 CITES allocation on Leopard for South Africa.

PHASA is getting legal council on the possibility of taking the fight to the SA government if they can be proven to be at fault.

All in all we are fighting the good fight on a broad front.

For a unrelated rant:
Everyone is so anti PHASA but nobody realizes the continued fighting PHASA IS ENGAGED IN DAILY. Not just for members or for SA outfitters but for all outfitters and often for regional issues that benefit regional outfitters too.

PHASA is the only South African hunting organization that has direct ties to DSC, SCI , WILD SHEEP FOUNDATION, dept ENVIRONMENTAL AFFAIRS of SA and USFW to name a few.

Decisions they make are made by members, fellow outfitters and PHs that are in the best interest of the industry and all outfitters, not just members.

I urge all unhappy outfitters an PHs to come to your nearest regional meeting and see for yourself what's going on instead of all the current negative unfounded gossip by people that are not involved and have no current info.

Dave you are 100% correct, PHASA is playing a massive role in the hunting fraternity. Their PR action that was launched 2 years ago is busy paying dividends.

Many people are complaining about PHASA, what irritates me most is that they sit on the side line and comment without getting involved. Get involved and participate in the best professional hunting organisation in the world, that way your voice will be heard.

Charl,
I am an active member of PHASA and attend all the regional meetings. I am living in Gauteng and attend the Gauteng regional meetings although I do all my hunting in Limpopo. I did not want to mention PHASA in my post before the newsletter was sent out.

From what I hear boys, some outside players might have had some influence in this decision as well?

A couple of years ago when I made adverse comments on how some photos and videos were being negatively presented on public forums I got shat on.

Further to those comments on several other occasions announced that we were looking at the "beginning of the end" as far as hunting in Africa and in general was concerned.

Again I was shat on.

The end is nigh, we all know it but too damn stubborn to accept the facts; rights or privileges notwithstanding.

I respectfully disagree Fujo

I truly hope it will as it has been the greater part of my life and sadly through the years have watched it degenerate to its pathetic present day status.

I couldn't agree more on all of that.

Lions & elephants are all but lost causes, hotels & airlines are being turned against us & laws are already in place (but temporarily suspended) on travel with firearms at least with the EU airlines/airports & the saddest part of it all is that hunters (at least in part) are to blame because of things like all those bloody silly videos of dodgy 'hunts' that have been posted over recentish years.

True hunters like the old school types of yesteryear would never have taken part in such 'hunts', let alone posted videos of such things.

Ah well, what's done is done but I'll bet the next generation won't have anything like the opportunities we've had. Frowner

Chaps,

The sky has not fallen on our heads. CITIES is fickle and simply requires certain statistics and info before the issue of permits. Zambia has experienced this on a couple of occasions with Croc and Leopard.

I don't remember quite when it happened but about sixish years (maybe more) ago the EUSSR introduced a new (Europe wide) law that prohibited ANY/ALL firearms and ammunition being transported into or out of any EU airport or port....... it caused chaos for a short period and the part regarding sporting firearms and ammo was suspended (but not withdrawn)a few weeks later.

It was discussed here and on other forums at the time and I remember pointing out at that time that by suspending the prohibition rather than withdrawing it completely, they could simply reintroduce it any time they wanted to......... and I'm sure that one day, they'll do exactly that.

Sometimes we wonder if the game depts provide all the necessary info cities require... Zimbabwe hunting quotas just out a few days ago... Quite a few areas have had leopard quotas reduced, this includes gov concessions, campfire areas and private land.

This is realy sad news. South africa produces some huge leopards. No doubt there are behind the scenes forces at work here.
