If you want to hunt in Africa and don't want to
mess with the airlines over guns, is it possible
to "rent" a gun from an outfitter?

Quite common- Some nationalities hardly ever bring their own firearms with. I would expect to have to lend my clients at either a medium bore or a shotgun (if they bought just two rifles with them)- as they generally come equiped for the big stuff only and there is alot more to hunting than just the ele or buff!

Sure it is possible. I have done it 3 times.
You (probably) won't get a magnum firebreather either. It is usually a .308/.270 is South Africa.

They may charge you a small daily fee. All of mine came free with the hunt.
Cheers

When I hunted with Jaco Human in South Africa in Oct. 05 he offered me the choice of a Sako in .375 H&H or a .308. Another PH I have hunted with in South Africa, Jan Dumon, usually has a 9.3 X 62 available.

Yes is the answer and it's an option that is hard to make as it seriously erodes the justification to own our own guns.

While taking our own guns can be a frustration it's not so bad that the renting option is that attractive. However if you have no ego for taking your own gun, it's surely something to consider.

I've done it myself and it worked out OK! I know I did not shoot as well because the triggers were terrible on both rifles. On the other hand it really was nice not traveling with guns. It made for a very relaxing and hassle free trip.

I have not used them yet but in Masailand we have a Pre 64 375 H&H with low power Leupold scope and a 300 WM with a Leupold. Both rifles are well maintained and have tuned triggers. The "Camp" gun in most safari camps will not be of that quality so if you are considering renting guns check out what is available frst.
