Unless it's a good bull, I couldn't. I had to trust in my PH! That worked for me. Short of that, I would have been in trouble.

This is what my PH told us to do when looking for red hartebeest, look for the space between the horns when facing you. Heavier the horn, the smaller the space. Good Luck

I saw lots of Hartbeest in Namibia, and never did figure out how to tell males from females. I had to rely on the PH. Heres a pic of a 23 3/4" female. Rowland Ward is 23".
