And what other game is available there? Can you give me a little help? This is a species I would like to acquire along with eland, and buffalo (any sub-species).

Bongo are an awesome, and rather specialized trophy. Check out this website for a crash course, and pricing:

http://www.safaritrackers.com/static/cam/bongo_rates.htm

If you have deep pockets, and indeed want an "Eland and Buffalo" plus a Bongo, do a 31-day hunt for Bongo, Lord Derby Eland and Dwarf Buffalo. This has to be one of, if not THE greatest combo hunts available today. EDIT - Just be aware of the time of the year, as ideal time to hunt LD eland may be different then that for the bongo.

Scary as that seems, I might be able to do it, but I will have to put off the hunt one more year from the 2008 plan.

I saw some very good reports about Mayo Oldiri safaris. See also Craig Boddington in a recent issue of Safari Times.

What other unique species to the hunt should I bew considering? I have always been after a Lord Derby eland [in my head] and the bong is just a mystical creature I have loved looking at for many years. Too bad we cannot throw in a mtn nyala and a kudu, I would be done!

Are You talking about this bongo

We took it one month ago in the CAR with a couple of leopards. In fact we didn't want any Derby Eland.

Jean, that is an incredible animal. Great color, powerful looking neck, scarred, massive horns...simply awesome. This might be my new obsession!!! Big Grin

And I think the picture is the clearest one of a bongo that I have ever seen, and I guess not many come out of the jungle whole.

I have been to the rain forest in SE Cameroon 3 times and have greatly enjoyed it. I am good friends with Geoffroy deGentille who is a partner with Regura the owner of Mayo Oldiri. Geoffroy is a tremendous ph and runs a wonderful camp.

I have been lucky to have hunted with the pygmies and have bayed 17 bongos. The 17th one is now in my trophy room. I will post a link to the pictures later.

I think the Bongo is one of the most beautiful animals on the continent, and that is really saying something. My PH in Botswana wrote the section in African Hunter II about Brazzaville and he had some great Bongo stories. Definitley a great trophy. Has anyone hunted them without dogs?

This bongo was shot without using any dog.

Just waiting in a highstand on a saline during the night, I 13 nights exactly for nothing save a serious virus got the 4th day. My cousin got no virus but this bongo the 5th day helped by the moonlight.
We didn't seriously hunt the Derby because both of us got one last year. Both of us shot a leopard too.

Jean,

I have seen only a few Bongo photos before, but that is one handsome Bongo! Does your cousin plan to have a full body mount? To lose that gorgeous cape would be a travesty! That is one beautiful skin. Hugh

Hugh

I have more close photos but with my bow ; I don't want to pretend having shot a bongo, but just to provide pics for nice companies such as Truglo, Trophy ridge and Bowtech, sort of free ads.

Of course my cousin will have his bongo full body mounted by or very close friend .
Next week end I am sure I'll see a couple of full mounted bongos at the Rambouillet Game Fair. Michel Vaillier

Yes,

it's a suppresor. It's a tiny 22LR CZ designed to shoot guinea fowls for the staff. My staff was less nourished because I am using a silent.....bow.
