I’m glad to see that USFWS says we should expect to see “significant progress on permit application backlog”. That’ll be huge. I’m curious as to why the progress is coming now. Is this because of decisions by the new director of USFWS, Martha Williams? Or was an Aurelia Skipwith initiative? Either way, it’s certainly good news.

Per our conversations with USFW Permit agents, most of the CITES Office has been focused on clearing the backlog of elephant permits per court order. This has delayed the Positive Determination findings until now. We are seeing an increase in permit approval. We just received an elephant permit from a 2022 Zimbabwe hunt that was approved in under 4 months. There should be significant movement on all permits now.
