Any appreciable differences between the .458 Lott and .416 Rem Mag for buff and elephant? I realize one shoots a 400 gr bullet vs a 500 gr bullet - but in reality, what do you or would you use?

Thanks

The diff. between the two is like a .375h&h v a .416rem. or an 06 v the .338winmag. It's a visible diff. on larger game. The .375h&h kills well, the .416/.404J hammers game, the .458Lott & above really hammers game. Unfortunately for me, the .416/.404J is my upper limit of recoil in a decent rifle weight.

On a specialized hunt for only buffalo and elephant the .458 Lott.

For mixed bag dangerous & non-dangerous game safari the .416 Remington Magnum.

Have shot an ele & buf with a 458 Lott...With full hunting load it will jump pretty good..
A 416 Rem is also a great thumper also...If the rifle is up to 10 lbs. it will be very managable....

Brad Rolston, a PH who posts here once sent a message to me

saying he carries the biggest calibered rifle that he physically

can and still shoot well at days end. For him it's 577 NE 3 1/4"

by www.searcyent.com - 750 grain bullet at 2100 FPS. Perfect advise.

Shot to the right place there isn't any noticable difference as far as I can tell.

Shot in the wrong place the heavier 500 gr. bullet, even out of the 458 WM, has a more stunning effect, usually, than a 400 gr. 416 bullet.

Hi DC:

As a matter of fact I have both calibers. From the receiving end, aka recoil, the 458 Lott kicks a hell of alot more than my hot loaded 416. My 416 Rem Mag. shoots about 2500 FPS with a 400 grain SAF.

The 458 Lott with a 500 grain Bullet hits me much harder. And that is a heavy 12 lb. (2) Mercury tubes in the stock, custom rifle.

Like Will says, if your shot is off a bit, the more power of the Lott can't be denied.

Regards.. Jim P.

I own the 416 rem mag and it has become my favorite DG gun. It is very accurate and packs a good punch. I have used mine on lion, buffalo, eland and bear.
