Spine shot on cape buffalo?

Some of you might remember a photo of us with 4 old bulls together posted here.

We were hunting in Matetsi, Zimbabwe.

An old friend of mine wanted to shoot a buffalo, but he wasn’t in able to walk a lot.

One morning, driving along, we saw 4 old bulls walking.

Hardly any wind, so we got ahead of them and waited.

My friend was using a 500.

The bulls were about 50 yards from us when one was clear, and my friend shot him.

In the guts!

The bull ran a few yards and stopped, behind a bush.

We decided to shoot all of them, but not before making sure the first one is dead.

We stayed there with them for quite a while, before the wounded one moved and my friend was able to kill it.

Then it was my turn to get the other three.

A few minutes later, we had all four down with 50 yards of each other!

Spine shots came in handy.

This trip brings up a couple of funny stories.

For a few days before this happened, we were concentrating on shooting bait for leopard.

And the boys in the butchery were giving us a hard time about not shooting buffalo!

Anyway, loaded one buffalo and headed to camp.

Our intention was letting the camp truck collect the other three while we carry on hunting.

We drove into camp, our trackers calling the skinners, shouting BUFFALO!

The skinners were very happy, and were running to the butchery while try to put their overalls on.

Our trackers screamed again, TWO BUFFALO!

The skinners screamed back YEA! YEA!

The trackers screamed THREE BUFFALO!

The skinners laughed.

The trackers screamed FOUR BUFFALO!

By this time we were at the skinning shed.

Lots of talking I couldn’t make heads or tails out of.

Alan and Roy were laughing!

Apparently the skinners did not believe we had 4 buffalo!

Result was they had to work all day, and part of the night, to get these buffalo done.

My friend wanted to shoot a giraffe.

Found an old bull, and Roy was trying to tell him to be cannot to shoot high.

Sure enough, he shoots the giraffe far too high.

The bull runs, and all we see is his head moving above the mopane trees!

He tried to shoot it in the head, but missed.

He couldn’t run, so me and Roy took off running after the giraffe!

Again, nothing to shoot at except his moving head.

The girl got to the road dividing our concession from the neighbors, and decided run on the road.

I aimed for his tail end.

At the shot he dropped on the road!

Another spine shot where there was no other option!

Yes I remember the photo of the 4 old buffalo. It was before I got going on buffalo. I remember looking at them with awe and a bit of envy.

When I started hunting buffalo over 40 years ago, I used to get told off whenever I spine one.

Roy used to scream “too high!”

He doesn’t any more.

Another one of his old trick was getting as close as we could!

Doesn’t any more.

In fact, now we hunt with his son, Alan.

I told Alan years ago if I can see it, I can hit it.

He took that to heart once.

Our friends from the other truck saw the tracks of a bull eland, and told us about it.

We decided to follow it.

He went into a wide open area, goes on for miles!

Roy went up a tree to get a better look.

He said he could see the eland about a mile away, under a tree.

Nothing between us and him, so off we went straight towards him.

About 500 yards away the eland started getting fidgety.

Alan puts the shooting sticks up and says “he is a bit far. Aim high!”

I did, and hit the eland as we could hear the bullet connect a couple of seconds later.

He ran into the bush.

We ran after him.

Saw him standing a few yards in the bush, and finished him.

I keep reminding Alan of this “he is a bit far, aim high!”

He laughs and says it worked!

Yes Saeed shot two bulls in one day out from under me and I can still hear his cackling laugh and Pierres laughter, they were having a wonderful day at my expense!! rotflmo All wonderful memories for this old curmudgeon.

As to the spine shot, keep in mind you must know where the spine is! The spine runs deeper in the body than many realize, its larger and has short ribs that count for an immobile animal..Its as easy to make as a heart shot, and like a heart shot some tend to shoot high I suppose... old

The one on now is a frontal shot as the buffalo was looking at us.

Next one will be of one walking.

Found another one just now where the bull was feeding at the edge of a shallow dry river.

We managed to get ahead of him and he was feeding towards us.

This one was very close.

Again, broke his spine and he dropped right there.

I remember us getting stuck in the sand and had to cut bushes to make a road of about 200-300 yards!

Hunting again with SAeed and Pierre, Richard, Pierres PH brother in law and I were in a gully and looked up and a nice dagga boy staring at us on the rimrock 125 yards, could see his chest and head. After some discussion Richard says, RAy take a rest on that limb and shoot him and I will shoot as soon as you fire are you ok with that..I said I think I can hit him but Im shooting my 470 with irons?? bit lets do it as II know you can hit him with your 458 Lott and the scope! game plan went as planned, I shot and he went to his knees and he turned and Richard shot. I shot a solid and Richard a soft as planned..We climed the steep grade to the top and no buff or blood and it was solid slick rock. We located a drop or two of blood and worked the area for sign and no more was found, as usual Pierre took the tracker and gave us the "cook" who mostly sat under a tree and picked his nose..got late and decided to come back tomorrow.

As it turned out Pierre and Saeed were going to hunt that area the next day and said they would look for the bull. That evening at camp having a couple of those beers with the Elephant picture on them Saeed and Pierre talked about the bull they shot and showed us the nice head and described the hunt and all were laughing a lot for some unknown reason and I was bummed and not in a laughing mood! when the described clowns seeing birds circling and Lions coughing and low and behold the Lions had ate my bull, who made it two miles from the murder scene..my shot was center and came out behind the shoulder and Richards went in behind the shoulder and came out at me entrance hole, they criss-crossed each other. That bull made it two miles, I gave Richard the head for a memory. SAeed gave me photographs to have mounted!!! Walter said so sad, Saeed and Pierre will never let you forget what good trackers you both are..I told Walter its the damn cooks fault,Gimme another one of those beers with the Elephant on it.

Just another two days of Saffari fun with a great group.

I posted one on Instagram today.

It was our first day hunt.

Saw bulls feeding quite far at a dry river bed.

Made a long detour to get downwind, although hardly any at that early time of day.

Had to crawl to get close to one feeding towards us.

Waited for him to clear some brush at the river’s edge, and shot him in the spine.

Never moved.

Just posted a video of a herd feeding towards us.

Lots of grass on our side of the river.

I got a clearing to a bull about 20 yards from us.

Feeding straight towards us.

High on the nose and that was it.

Alan was laughing.

Asked why I shot him in the head.

I told him he was ready to charge!

There are quite a few hunters on Instagram, including many on here.

It is great for sharing pictures and videos.

It is the only social media I use.

No FB

Maybe a screenshot of the phone display showing the App in question may help.

I often have to call on my daughter to assist in accessing some of the available functions on either phone or computer which I am clueless about.

Exactly!

I have been building my own computers for years, and think I am probably better than most of them.

But, I do get lost in the modern applications and their uses, and so go to my daughter for help! clap

I went looking. Couldn't find. Apparently, there's more than one kind of iPhone. Don't know what mine is. Didn't find a bright pink app. Back to Plan B and my daughter.

I think I will start calling you Lavaca Flintstone!

Fred must be your older brother!

If you have an iphone.

It is APPLE.

If you have another make, it is CHROME.

By the way, I like the Flintstones.

We nicknamed my daughter when she was little BAMBAM like Fred's daughter.

She LOVED it!
