Do you have a favorite African Hunting Knife? I know that there is a general knife forum here on AR, but I just had to post some photos of the latest African Hunting knife that Carlton Evans has recently finished for me. Scrimshawed on ancient mammoth ivory with the Magnificent Seven by Linda Karst Stone. The knife has a black elephant hide sheath. Enjoy!

Do carry a large knife, UEG. The first was one of Tom Ferry's original Damascus blades, African Hunter I, that was too big. He did African Hunter II that I often carry to this day even 'tho the blade is too thin (1/8") for a serious camp knife.
Sheaths are molded to the knife with a panel of ostrich shin skin inset. Will post pix later.
Must say that yours is a spectacular blade.
Regards, Tim

Thanks everyone. I usually carry a standard fixed blade Boker knife that has seen a lot of use in Africa, but occasionally I do take one of my "nicer" knives. This one will go on the next safari. I don't let the trackers and skinners, however, sharpen it! Thanks for all of the kind comments. Carlton does one heck of a job on his knives and they are very functional as well as beautiful. You can meet him at SCI or at DSC, if any of you have an interest in having him commission you a knife.
However i take Buck Knives as gifts for the camp staff. I only take knifes for the number of persons working the camp that the PH let me know about.
PH's will receive a knife from A. H. Russell's I try to pick up 1 or 2 quality custom knife to take over for them.

UEG, since you obviously can't take this beautiful knife in your carryon, are you really willing to put it in a checked bag, knowing full well the theft problem??? i know you use hard sided luggage, but still.... the real tragedy here is the concern over theft. i have quite a number of nice custom knives i would enjoy carrying/using on safari but i just can't convince myself the risk is worth it.

I'd hate to think of that knife ending up chopping vegetables in some shack in Jo'burg. In three trips to Africa I can't remember ever needing a knife anyway.

I've carried them before in my Tuff Pak and in my fanny pack inside of the Tuff Pak, but you guys are making me nervous. . . . . . . Thanks for the advice and sage wisdom.
Good looking knife. Carlton does great work, he has made three for me a folder and two fixed blades as well as my sons caper. They all get used and both of us took ours on our last trip to S Africa. Carlton wants his knives used.
Very beautiful! The African continent design on Carlton's knife sheaths (as made by Paul Long) was actually my idea. I presented it to Carlton a few years back, along with some other ideas on African knives, and Carlton liked it. I actually received the very first "African continent" knife sheath that Carlton had made(See one of my fixed blade pics below) I think that it really adds to his African line of knives very nicely. The recent scrimshawed knife is actually my fifth knife made by Carlton. Two of them have been to Africa with me already. I have three fixed and two folders. Three of the handles below are Mammoth ivory and the other("Zebra") is elephant ivory and cape buffalo horn, with an elphant hide sheath as well. Here's some pics of the other four:

chopping vegetables my ass! more likely would be used to chop up a person at a Joburg red light who didn't want to surrender his car.
