Pelican built Browning TravelVault. Three trips to Africa and the outside looks like hell, but the guns have arrived unhurt. "There always seems to be a big market for making the clear, complex."

There was a good article in American Hunter (or Rifleman) not too long ago where they tested various cases to destruction. Their conclusion was that the SKB was the best choice, considering the current 50lb per item limit on airline luggage. It was almost as tough as the heavier cases but quite a bit lighter. I just ordered a Hardigg Storm. I have used a tuffpack and it's a good case with some advantages. However, It's a pain to pack and unpack. Also,The last time I brought rifles thru U.S. Customs the offficer complained about tuffpacks since they are supposed to handle them without assistance from the owner. If I'm not mistaken when you fly into JoBerg from the U.S. your ammo is in your checked luggage per U.S. air companies guide lines. When leaving JoBerg SAA requires your ammo be in your gun case. Is there amble room in the Storm and other flat cases to carry your ammo in if you are transporting two guns? Has anyone had an weight issue when transfering your ammo to your gun case leaving JoBerg?

My Browning Travelvault has made five trips to Africa, two trips to Canada and approximately twenty to Montana, Wyoming, Idaho and Nebraska. I have watched the ground crews drop it, throw it and abuse it in numerous ways. It is battle scarred but has never let me down and my rifles have always arrived in one piece and in excellent shape. The only drawback is its weight. I really think that it has put on a few pounds, just like I have over the past fifteen years. Bull1

No, as per the latest regs it's the opposite. It's acceptable per the guidelines of many airlines in the U.S.A. to have ammunition packed with the firearms but in the checked luggage is OK also. Until a few months ago, the airlines in South Africa required that ammunition be packed with the firearms that has changed. For South African travel, ammunition now must be packed in the regular luggage and not with the firearms.

Another vote for SKB. I bought the one that has the cutouts for two rifles so they can't move inside the case. Paid about $180 in 2000. Six African trips and no problems. "Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail" - Emerson

I use an older pre-wheel Browning Travel Vault. Two trips inside the US. No trouble but too heavy, esp with todays 50# restrictions. Hunting: Exercising dominion over creation at 2800 fps.
