I hunted with Peter back in 1999 in Zambia, just a few months after he got hit by the Lion - see the DVD "In the Jaws of Simba" - and found him to be a very personable and relaxed PH. Actually had a great time on a last minute, arranged while in Africa safari. He was hunting for S&S at the time. Took Buff and PG, including a wary Bushbuck; we tried for 3 days before I got him.

I'd hunt with Peter again.

MBB,

I hunted Lower Lupande in '98. Lots of cats and elephant with some buffalo. Also loads of people as it is quite close to Mfuwe. My preference on the Luangwa would be to move up the river away from all the folks.

I understand Peter is quite good but Lower Lupande is not the best Luangwa area.

MBB,
PM Bill Campbell who posts on these forums. He has hunted with Peter and had good things to say about him. Better yet I recall he posted his Hunt Report so do a Search and see if it is still out there. Good Luck!
Cheers,
Russell

MBB, I saw your post but didn't reply as I figured you were looking for recent (2008) info only. But as Russell says I hunted with Peter in 2004 for lion and buffalo, and had a very nice hunt and Peter and I got along well. It is a shame that over the years we have lost touch. He and Sarge, who has come into his own since and I often see on TV, worked hard for me and ran a good camp. I enjoyed seeing Africa thru their eyes. I would happily hunt with Peter or Sarge again.

Comm’s can be somewhat difficult as the booking agent (Wes Hixon) pretty much disappeared after the deposit was sent and like any PH, Peter is mostly away. For this reason many will be happier with the DuPloy’s (who I spoke to in 04 before they became popular with the AR gang, and really thought highly of, but we could not work out the dates for Sept when I needed to go).

Reg Lower Lupande, I have not been elsewhere along the Luangwa so I cannot compare concessions, but I will say that for me the local villages dotted along the main dirt track running parallel to the river added to the experience. They were friendly and colorful, and it truly felt like "real Africa". I have hunted in wilderness concessions and communal lands, but none before or after has had the same wonderful blend. Things may have changed since 2004 and the area was seeing more people move in from rural areas, but I suspect it is much the same.

I never saw so many lion, multiple times every day, and several daytime leopard sightings. Nights in/around camp were a hoot, with elephant, hyena and even a herd of buffalo. Lots of hippo of course, and I don’t think a morning passed with lion calling, either in the concession or across the river in the Park. All this I would expect at any of the areas along the Luangwa, it is a neat place.

There was, and think still is, a commercial flight from Lusaka to the general hunting area, thereby avoiding an expensive charter flight, but at the expense of flexibility.

There is a link to a short report (old-school report!) in my signature, and online at:

Feel free to PM/email me with any specific questions.

Regards,

Bill
