I have missed far more baboon than I have hit, but I love the challenge of hunting them, but as many of you know, they are keen sighted and disappear quickly. Unless you really catch them in the open you seldom get more than one or two shots at them. I've been thinking of a special "baboon rig". Considered a Browning lever gun in 22-250, but started thinking last night that a Remington 7600 pump in 243 (the smallest caliber they make) may do the trick. The 7600 isn't exactly a precision firearm, but would allow for a quick follow up or two....or I could practice reloading quicker with a bolt rifle. Anyone else have similar thoughts, or other solutions? ______________________________ "Are you gonna pull them pistols,...or whistle Dixie??" Josie Wales 1866

Capstick used an Ingram supposedly on a whole troop. I know the South Africans use suppressors a lot. Are they legal for baboon? That would make an interesting rig. Sounds like you might be going for something inexpensive but perhaps you could borrow one of their guns. _______________________________

My coyote rig would be a good choice: HK 660 in 223 with a 3-9x VX2 and a 10 round magazine. Despite being a semi-auto, my HK is pretty accurate, 2.5" groups @200 yds with Black Hills factory ammo.

Yeah those dang baboons are a tough hunt for sure. We hunted them in mountains 5 afternoons, and 1 morning in august 07. I shot at 350 to 600 plus yards. Most of them were walking or jumping high in the mountains. I think I needed more magnification as the baboons were hidden behind the duplex on 9x on a Leupold 3x9. I think even with a AR-15 it would be just as hard. Funny thing is sometimes they will come in close at a waterhole , however I have never seen that happen. Also in town we saw them in the park laying by the road.

You al on to something! That HK 660 is sweet, I bought one about 15 years ago, then sold it unfired. Now they are quite pricey BUT as you all know, no semi autos in Africa for visiting hunters. And suppressors are highly illegal here without a Class III permit which I could never get (Law enforcement only I believe)Always looking for an excuse to buy another rifle, I picked up a BLR take down in 243 today. I'll rig it up and see how it does... ______________________________ "Are you gonna pull them pistols,...or whistle Dixie??" Josie Wales 1866

Actually, class 3 is not illegal and not for LEO only but that's beside the point. Good luck on your new rifle. _______________________________

I think he's in CA now, where it is illegal to own a suppressor for lowly civilians. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorius triumphs, even though checkered by failure... than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat. - Theodore Roosevelt

That's correct...and 50 BMG and a lot of other stuff that is legal in most of the States. Regardless, he wouldn't be able to travel overseas with one but my point was that he might be able to borrow one there. He did ask for solutions. Maybe he should move to another state? _______________________________

I am glad to hear that I was not the only one who had trouble with baboons. I went to Mozambique in June and made about 15 stalks on baboons before I finally got a big male. Man they are wary. My 416 did the trick-dropped him in his tracks in fact. I can hardly wait for my skull to get back. They make an awesome trophy.

450 NE You Texans know how to get the job done! CapeHunter I think this is why we like pursuing them so much. I come home thinking more about the missed baboon than about anything else! RM007 Yes, seems to me the 416 will probably do the job! ______________________________ "Are you gonna pull them pistols,...or whistle Dixie??" Josie Wales 1866

HOLY COW, that guy was shooting that Winchester at almost 500 rounds per min!!! That is smokin. Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety (1759)

404: Take a look at the Remington 7615. It is basically a 7600 in 223 caliber that uses an AR 15 clip. Now that is baboon firepower!
