Why is Safari Press so horrible at getting out orders?

I try to avoid these guys like the plague since my previous orders have taken an eternity but I caved to a recent discount and placed an order. I paid almost $17 dollars extra for priority mail 3-4 day shipping, that was 20 days ago!

What is their problem with getting things out in a timely manner? Amazon ships same day and they can't get some books out in three weeks?!

I have never had any problems with Safari Press and I have ordered scores of books from them. If I were you, I would call them to discuss the situation as well as your past ordering history to find out just what the problem is.

They are slow as a rule. I have gone to ordering from a guy on ebay who actually ships within a day or two.

Goes by k3h4t5

He isn't any cheaper, and doesn't have everything SP carries, but he has always been quicker.

I got my 'Month's of the Sun' in decent time. However I was very disappointed in the design and execution of the book. I don;t know if SP designed the thing but I hope the words are a lot better than the design/execution of the book itself.

Dear GeoffM24,

Care to let me know what you ordered? I will see when it went out, or why itdid not. As a rule we ship all orders within 1-2 working days, in fact 85% go out the next working day. I will do my best to see what happened with your order.

Except for backordered items, they have always been fairly quick in my experience. I had some problems in the past due to shipping to Canada, but they have gotten all that worked out. (If anyone's listening though Wink , the HIGH shipping cost, especially on multiple book orders, does keep me from ordering more books/DVDs!)

I agree with you on the postage to Canada. Unfortunately in the last 5 years the US post office has gone from Canadian package friendly to CP hostile. We now pay more per lbs to get something to Toronto than to Johannesburg. It is a mess but we have no way around it. Worse yet there are no incremental discounts, that is the cost of the first lbs is the same as the cost of the 10th lbs. So sending a large package to one address saves nothing!

I'm sorry to hear that you have had problems. I tend to get very antsy when waiting on orders. I have placed a couple of dozen orders with Safari Press and I have always received things very quickly.

Hi Ludo,

Yah, knowing you could have ordered a whole 'nuther book (or two) for the price of the shipping is a killer, but I do understand that the rates have gone up on your side.

I actually live fairly close to the border....I might have to get you to start shipping to an outlet I occassionaly use on the US side.

Might be the best way to maximize by book-bang-for-the-Canuck-buck.

Smiler

Cheers
Canuck

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

Everything has been straightened out, it was an address screw up and email problems.

I think my other orders are probably my fault in that media mail from Cali to Mass takes 10 days + easy it seems.

A tracking number email or tracking number listing on the order page would have cleared up the problem.

I get the automatic emails, but I have not gotten a single email from the female office manager who shall we say "aggressively" insisted she replied to my email. I have no record of this in my email, in my spam filter, or in my email trash. I have asked her to forward the sent email to me but I have gotten no response so she either isn't sending them or they are not getting through. This is odd as the automatic emails from info@ come through immediately.

From what I have glanced at the story looks great but it's the physical book that I think lacks. Maybe done that way to justify the price.

This book is now in its 3rd printing and selling ever more copies. A lot of people must have liked it to have sold that well.

Do you allow folks to return books they don't like after they have read them for full credit?

If not, sales numbers of relatively scarce items that most people don't have easy access to the personal opinions of previous buyers are not a good indication of how good a book really is.

We have a 30-day no questions asked money-back grantee as long as the book is like new. DVD sales are final as soon as you break the seal because so many people now unfortunately copy them and return. We are very, very picky what we offer for sale in DVDs hence we have very few DVD gripes.

And I should say that we get few book returns as well, the most common reason for return is "Already had the book and did not realize it."

Slow or not, one book I wish you could re-print (or maybe do an update of) is "Chui" by Lou Hallamore.

That is one I would wait to get from you guys. Big Grin

That qualifies as "horrible"? Roll Eyes

At least you spelled "Safari Press" correctly - which gives this thread some positive advertising value.

This post actually reminded me to order something from SP. I ordered the item, received 2 email updates that evening and the item was shipped the next morning. I'll have to say their service seems fine to me.

That is very nice to hear and a generous policy.

But please don't tell my wife!

In the past, I have ordered a book for my dad for a gift that knew he already had, but I didn't. He gets it, winks, says he already has it. I order him something else and he gives me his second copy later. Wife doesn't suspect a thing. (well, actually, she probably does) Wink

Never had a problem with promptness from Safari Press. I ordered and I got product. Time never occurred to me.

Then again, don't know how long it took -- but it happened -- that's what's important. You need to take my comment in perspective. Consider the factors:

1. I'm busy. I order, I expect delivery and forget about it unless it's too inordinately long (that assumes I haven't already forgotten about it entirely);

2. I married a woman of Irish descent 27 or so years ago (Again, I may have forgotten the exact date, but just a piece of advice to the younger members, based upon approximately 20 some-odd years of marriage -- women find that crap really important and you ought to mark your calendar -- or have your secretary do it, which is a better plan because she actually reads that stuff). Anyway, after beating my head against the wall for the first few (10-20) years, I decided that "Irish time" was acceptable. Beats the hell out of divorce (which, by the way the Church doesn't recognize -- You can't tell her, but I checked);

3. After a few trips to Africa, I learned that "Irish time" is basically the same as "African time". "Now" just means sometime in the foreseeable future -- and leprichans and witchdoctors can look a long time into the future;

4. Anything with a Swahili or Gaelic word in the name -- such as "Safari" ought to get a significant amount of slack on how timely they respond.

This is just my personal observation on the situation and life in general. I disavow any negative connotations that might be ascribed to me regarding the Irish, (my wife in particular), Africans (either generally, specifically or by analogy), Safari Press or anyone using the term "Safari" or any other Swahili or Gaelic word, term or reference.

Never had any issues with timely handling of my order. On a couple of occasions, over dozens of orders, there was an issue with the book..but Safari Press made it right...quickly.

I'd be interested in seeing more available in audio form.
