Australia
I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains,
Of ragged mountain ranges,
Of drought and flooding rains.
I love her far horizons,
I love her jewel-sea,
Her beauty and her terror
The wide brown land for me!

Todd WilliamsCouldn't understand a word you said Sean!! What the hell is a C a C 500NE anyway?!!
Hey, I enjoyed sharing the charter flight with you guys and seeing you all around camp at Pedza when the hunt took us over that direction.
That is a beautiful Searcy you have there. Butch sure does nice work. I hope you enjoyed my VC 577NE. You did handle it well. And thanks for finally shooting that tuskless!! We really needed some bait at that point!

BenKKGood fun! Cheers, Wombat. Good video. I've only had a couple of shots with a double .577NE, and I agree that it isn't much more than a double .500NE.

CCMDocGreat videos and nice shooting. I used a similar video camera afixed to my hat on last safari. Great results.
Nice demonstration of what many know - no big difference in recoiled though some of the "sameness" is actually due to the difference in weight.
What's acceptable in weight and recoil is subjective.

cal pappasNice videos. What language were they speaking?
I don't have the exact statistics in front of me but I did an article on recoil for the African Hunter a short time ago. Recoil in itself is only one factor. (Approximately) felt recoil will be the same in an 11 pound .500, a 13 pound .577, and a 16 pound .600. Of course, the shooter's build and stock dimensions confuse the calculation. When folks say a .600 will knock the shooter off his feet, I just silently chuckle.
Cheers, gents.

NakihunterGreat videos. That GoPro set up is really cool.
I thought the recovery for the second shot was bit slower with the 577NE. JMHO
Thanks for sharing the great clips.

It's called Strayn... it will be the 'world language' when we finally take over!! The Chinese are just a decoy...

D R HunterI'll vote for a
14 pound 577 NE.
I enjoyed these two videos very much!

Correct bullet placement, combined with the required depth of bullet penetration, results in an anchored animal...

Remember when I was in the army, we were issued with the FAL (by another name). The story there was that in one platoon, someone who was seriously disliked was distracted and "someone" turned the gas regulator closed on his FAL.
When he fired his first round prone, "it shifted him back 3 feet" (sometimes it broke his shoulder as well.
Everyone claimed to have been there and seen it, of course. Pity a .308 Win by another name just doesn't have the Voema to do that. Nice story, though.

The two guns in these videos weighed 10.5 lbs for the Searcy 500NE and 12.5 lbs for the VC 577NE. Sean and I weighed them prior to his shooting.

PulicordsI don't know about recoil, but I'd venture a guess that those four rounds cost about as much as my last electric bill!

BaxterBFunny...just today I walked by some GoPro's on display and thought "Why doesn't someone on safari put one of these on their head or mounted underneath the gun?"
Nice job! Good shooting!

Nah, com'on, it was four foot and the wee little buggers were swung around 90 degs and were shooting down the line, killing two of his mates and the instructor was jumping on his ankles. You have to get the full story.

What were the multiple video cameras for? Two larger ones pointed at you from the GoPro. You making a hunting video? Or just for personal viewing?

John,
One was Shaun's cameraman filming his hunt and the other was mine, filming my hunt. He also had the Go Pro on his head that was owned by his friend Matthew

That's exactly what I did on my last safari. Used a Contour that I zip-tied to my hat. Worked great and I have my elephant stalk and shot on video.
These things are great!

Doc,
Have you posted that video? I'd like to see it. What about your Dad? Did he have the Go Pro on his head when he shot the leopard?

Thanks. I guessed it might be something like that. Or Wombat the future movie star.

NitroXBTW this is another interesting way to record a film. Borrowed a couple of photos to illustrate it. Saw these at Verney-Carron in Sept/Oct this year. Uses a special mount to attach a good video camera with zoom to the rifle. Allowing a zoomed video to be filmed of the target animal being shot.

376 steyrWhy was there not much muzzle jump? Were these full power loads? I guess some people just have a real ability for handling heavy recoil.
02 December 2012, 03:23
Todd WilliamsAt least in the case of my 577NE in the video, I assure you they were full power loads. The reason you are questioning the amount of muzzle jump in my opinion is that the recoil of these two calibers has greatly been exaggerated over the years. They really aren't that bad once you spend a little trigger time with them. Especially if the stock fits correctly.
02 December 2012, 04:01
BiebsAgree with Todd...I find the 577 quite easy to shoot. It's more comfortable than many other rifles I've shot.
04 December 2012, 10:02
NitroXMuzzle jump depends on a lot of factors. The weight and structure of the person firing it is a big one. A lighter person will move more. How they are holding the rifle. How they are standing etc. The usual factors influencing recoil, weight of the rifle etc etc.
Sometimes the jump looks more from the perspective of the person firing too.
I thought the muzzle jump was quite low too in the videos for the cartridges being fired. Obviously wombat knows how to shoot them.
