I notice that on a list of largest trophies taken in Namibia that the number one buffalo, and several in the top 10, have come from Waterberg Plateau Park.

I was led to believe that the only viable buffalo hunting in Namibia is in Caprivi. Waterberg ain't Capriv!

Anybody know anything about hunting in Waterberg? Who hunts there (PH-wise)? Are there a lot of buffalo there? What's the lay of the land? Etc., etc., etc.

A lot of big animals behind fences where they don't belong and never were.

So, you are saying that buffalo are not indigenous to this area and that it is a fenced concession?

I have no idea myself.

Alf is correct. It's a small herd atop the huge plateau and they are otherwise protected. I've hunted within sight of it several times (with Peter Sohrada). The 'buffs occassionally wander off. One turned up near Kombat (at least 60 miles north of the Waterburg) about two years ago. It was promptly shot as the cattle ranchers do not want them near their cattle. Beef production/export is a big business in that country and the producers don't want their cattle infected with common 'buff diseases.

P.S. I've been told that 'buffs used to occur naturally in much of Namibia but were killed off years ago by the cattle ranchers.

Sounds like it would be a neat place to hunt. Anybody know who hunts there?
