The first time I used a Rem 700 in .350 RM with handloads of 225-grain Nosler Partitions at 2500 fps.



Next time will be a Blaser R93 in 9.3x62 with handloads of 286-grain Nosler Partitions at 2335 fps.

On your last hunt what did you use for plains game? I'm not trying to get an answer about the best all around cartridge, I just want to know what model and caliber rifle you used. Thanks.

Pre 64 Model 70 .338 Win Mag.

1st safari to Zim was a ranch hunt for plainsgame & leopard. I used a 350 RemMag in a factory Rem 700 Classic. Bullets used were the 225gr Nosler Partition....took kudu, waterbuck, eland, and impala. Longest shot was about 125 yards.

2nd safari to Zim in Matetsi 6 for leopard, buffalo and plainsgame. I used a Lazzeroni 9.53 Hellcat (375-cal) shooting 300gr Nosler Partitions and solids....took buffalo, leopard, sable, kudu, warthog, zebra, and impala. Longest shot was about 225 yards on sable but most were around 100-125 yards. Took the 350 RemMag along as a backup and used it to shoot some baboons.

For me, the 375-caliber is "the" Africa cartridge....also the 9.3x62, 9.3x64 and the 9.3x72R.

Shot placement still counts. The impala shot with the .375 was hit low in the stomach, ran off in knee high grass and was not found until the next morning. The other four animals hit with the .375 either dropped in place or ran no more than 30-40 yards from high heart/forward lung shots. The kudu was shot at about 20 yards and the gemsbok at about 290-300 yards. The gemsbok was the one who fell straight down from a spine shot � the spine is surprisingly low in the body where it runs between the scapulas.

One blesbok and one springbok walked a ways after being hit in the rear half of the lungs. The other blesbok and two springbok literally fell straight down from a low neck shot severing the spine and two high shoulder shots respectively. All blesbok and springbok were about 100 yards up to maybe 180-200 yards when shot.

Next time I�m going to take this same pair but will just carry the .375 all the time and shoot everything with it.

30/404 wildcat, built on a Dakota 76 action and a Lilja barrel.

Different makes of 180 grain bullets at 3430-3480 fps.

Remington 700 Classic in 8mm Mag. with 220 grain Barnes Xs.

I had planned on taking a Win. 70 Classic LT in 338, but when it proved tempermental, I fell back on the Rem.



Also used a Winchester Safari Classic in 416 Rem Mag using 350 grain Barnes Xs.

On my last hunt I used a krieghoff double in 375 H&H with factory federal TBBC 300 gr. I took a tsessebe and a hyena
I also used my PH's brno 300 win mag to take an impala.

On my first hunt I used a pre 64 model 70 in 375 H&H - Buffalo and kudu - federal TBBC 300 gr, and a 30-06 model 70 classic - lechewe, impala, warthog, and tsessebe. 180 gr federal TBBC 180 gr.
I haven't decided what I'm taking next year.

The last time I hunted in africa was in RSA with a Brno .308 that I borrowed from a friend, since we had no guns with us on our drive through africa.
The previous trip, in Namibia; A Blaser in .375H&H, and the trip before that, in Zim; a Weatherby in .300Wby.

My last trip I used a CZ 550 American 9.3X62 with 250gr North Fork bullets to take 10 head of plains game.

For my buffalo, eland, kudu, wildebest and a second zebra, I used my Blaser .375 shooting .300 grain Trophy Bonded Bear Claws.

For my first zebra, 2 impalas, a tsessbe, and a wart hog, I used a custom .300 win mag built on a Sako action shooting 200 gr Swift-A-Frames.

2002 - plains game and buffalo - .375 H&H Whitworth with 300 gr Woodleighs - RNSP and RN FMJ

1994 - plains game, duiker to eland - .30-06 Parker Hale Mark X with 180 and 200 gr Nosler Partitions

Browning A-bolt Medallion .30-06 using 180 gr. Remington Core-Lokt the first time and 165 gr. Federal Premium BTSP's the second time. Both these bullets performed adequately. Animals taken include jackals, guinea fowl, baboons, reedbuck, impala, duiker, oribi, steenbok, warthogs and tsessebe. One shot kills except the reedbuck where I missed the first shot shooting into a thicket and the guinea fowl where I got two for one.



Browning A-bolt II Medallion .338 Win. Mag. w/ BOSS using 230 gr. Winchester Fail Safes both times. I'll never use Fail Safes in this gun again. Too much like a solid i.e. no expansion. Animals taken include zebra, kudu, eland and wildebeest and sable. One shot kills except the wildebeest which took three although two would have done the job.

A .300 Weatherby Mag. and 200 grain Remington Safari Grade Swift A-Frame ammo.

Ruger M77 MkII in .30-06 with 220gr Woodleigh round nose bullet loaded to 2460fps. Plains game only hunt in South Africa in 2002.

I used a borrowed Pre'64 M70 in 375 H&H for everything in Tanzania last summer. The Federal load with the TBBC and solids worked fine for everything from dik-dik to eland.

Other than one bull sable, for which I used a .416 Remington with the 350 grain X bullet, I've taken all my plainsgame with the .375 with 270 grain X bullets. No complaints.

On my LAST Plains game hunt, I used mostly a Pre 64 M 70 300 Win Mag with 180 gr Federal Classic 180 gr Sierra Pro Hunters. Also used some 180 gr Swift A-Frames. No complaint with either bullet.

But, for Eland and Gemsbok, I took the 338 Win Mag Rem 700 with a Walther barrel and Federal Premium 225 gr Bear Claws.

Those big 225 gr Bear Claws are awesome.

Winchester 70, 30-06. 180 grain Nosler Partition, 200 grain Norma Oryx.

Last seven trips have used custom Mdl 70 stainless in 375 H&H for all game except Ele. 470 Merkel for Ele. 375 loaded with 300gr Nosler Par or 300gr Woodleigh solids. 470 with 500gr Federal/Woodleigh solids or softs.

1st and 2nd, Pre-64 M70 in .338 Win Mag.
Next (June) .320 DGC (8mm wildcat, potent) on Pre-64 M70 everything, including even the barrel, which is a rebored .30-06.

I used a SS Rem 700 375 H&H in a cheap hogue stock, worked out just fine. Shot 250 gr banes X, reloader 15. Shot two bull Kudu (both Kudu same day), shot two impala, wildebest, Zebra. Don't really care for Rem's but it was the only 375 I had, I have to admit it did fine, for plains game I'd take it again in a heart beat. I had it scoped with a last generation 1 1/5 x 6 B&L Bolvar scope.

Also took a 300 wby Mk V ultralite but never took any game with it. I prefer the 375.

Springfield '03-A3 chambered in .338-06, took Kudu, Zebra, Blesbok, Warthog and Impala out to 250 yards. Nosler 210g Partitions, excellent cartridge!!

I hunted in the Eastern Cape of the RSA. Used a M70, Featherweight in .280 Rem for Kudu, Springbok, Mountain Reedbuck, Steenbok, Impala. One son used a M70, Featherweight in .270 for Impala, Wildebeast (Blue and Black), Nyala, Blesbok, Springbok. The other son used a M70,Featherweight in .243 Win. for Springbok, Blesbok, Impala, Kudu, then a .300 Win Mag (CZ borrowed from a PH) for Zebra. All used Nosler Partitions.

Also used a .22-250 on Springbok and monkeys.

No lost game.

My last two trips I took a 416 Rem Searcy Mauser, it works for me...I also took a double rifle in 450-400. I used the 416 for the most part in RSA for plainsgame and Eland, then to tanzania for Buffalo...where I used them both for Buff and the 416 for plainsgame...The 416 Rem is a good one gun safari rifle as can be had IMO....It is a great plainsgame rifle and if you run into a mad Lion, Buff or elephant then your prepared to do battle..

For a strictly plainsgame hunt I always take my 300 H&H and/or a 338 Win., both Custom rifles I built some years ago.

My last hunt for plains game was a combo with buff in Masailand, Tanzania. Since I just carried one gun, it was my old faithful. A custom Brno in .375 H&H shooting 300 grain Failsafes and Barnes Solids. Longest shot was at a Grants Gazelle at around 200 yards.

WOW This is way more replies than I expected. Seems alot of people stand behind the 375 H&H as much as it's recommended. The 338 also has alot of users too. There sure are a lot of people who have been to Africa.

I guess a winchester m70 classic can't be as bad as they are made out to be. Seems like there are a lot of happy users here. I need to get another rifle for my safari and was think about buying the m70 classic safari express in 375, but Ray's comment on the 416 rem mag has got me thinking. How's the recoil from this caliber? Sure is tempting. Is it practical economically if you don't hand load?

After my Remington AWR 300 WM quit working I went to my old faithful model 70 .458 WM with 350 grain Barnes X. It was twice as much fun to shoot as the .300.

The ammo is going to cost you less the trophy fees. That is for sure.
When you pick caliber cost should not be considered unless it is for target practise.
375 and 416 are both good "cheep" calibers there are pros and cons on both calibers.

Over the past 10 years, I have taken, borrowed, accidently grabbed and used the following on plains game .308, .416, .30-06, 458 Lott, .450 Dakota

In namibia last aug I shot 2 eland,4 kudu,1 gemsbok,1 haretbeast and 2 warthog with a Marlin 45/70 and 350 grn Horn and an 8x68 FN mauser with RWS factory 196 H mantel ammo. No complaints with either cal.
