You know Alf, buy looking closely @ that sectioned pic, it almost looks like a 7mmWby. might have gotten chambered in a.270Wby. rifle? That is not an event I would wish on anyone, escept maybe Michael Moore!

This is as good as a thread gets, and is exactly what the internet was designed to facilitate. Alf, Careful with that Varget. It certainly changed my life. Thanks for the diagrams and especially the Sako picture. Having a rifle blow up like that will make any surgeon's life flash before his eyes. Rip, With reloading manuals I believe more and more in President Reagan's phrase "trust but verify". JCN

JCN, Thanks. I'll have plenty of the 340 grain North Forks for later. I want to get a 27" Lothar Walther barrel onto a CZ 550 in the meanwhile. Alf, Let's stick with PSI since it is more universal. The A-Square values are correct then, CIP controlled: Max Average = 46,444 CUP = 52,975 PSI Max Individual = 53,411 CUP = 60,929 PSI 2820 fps with a 340gr/.423cal North Fork SP from a 27" Lothar Walther barrel is a stunt I will try, along with getting +2600 fps from 400 grainers (like Ray and Saeed do in fact do with no indications of problems) and maybe 2700 fps from 380gr North Forks. If I don't blow myself up, I will then see about getting Charlie to pressure test the best of what I think is safe. Kids: Don't try this at home.

Does anyone know what the velocity was of the last factory 404 Jeff ammo manufactured? I ask because I am astounded by the max pressures allowable, that have been quoted. If anyone DID load factory ammo that hot, and someone tried to stick one of those puppies down a tight (418) barrel, the result would look like the rifle at the top of this page. Then again, that high max might very well be from them testing a 423 load down a 418 barrel. Unless they were using Unique, I would be surprised if the original, oft touted load of 400grs at 2150, exceeded 40,000 psi. At least any reasonably modern powder would do that easily. I got 2379 @ 47,100psi using 90 grs of IMR 4831 behind the Woodleigh. RIP yeh, you send that load to Charlie to test Mike

... with the pressure barrel tied to a tire.

Mike, I think the most modern factory loads were close to 2400 fps with a 400 grain bullet. Ray or Alf might know, Kynoch google pending ... Don't worry about me and those cute 340 grainers. I won't do anything you wouldn't do.

Gee, was that 2307 fps or 2357 fps for the RWS 400 grain .404 Jeffery factory loads? Sumbuddy who know? My google time has been limited lately.

Todays RWS ammo which was recently discontinued, ran a bit over 2350 FPS on my chronograph through a 26" barrel. I don't recall the exact muzzle velocity but it was a 10 shot average...
