Has anyone hunted the Kwekwe area of Zim.? I am looking at a possible buff/sable hunt in that area with Charlton McCallum for '07. The buff would be hunted in Chirisa and the sable in Kwekwe.

Lhook7,

I have not hunted there....YET! I am booked for a buff/sable hunt with Charlton McCallum for this November. Going to hunt buff in Chirisa (along with a tuskless elephant) and then move over to Kwekwe for sable, eland, zebra, hyena, warthog, bushbuck and baboon.

Good luck on the hunt! I was going to post a question about Chirisa and saw your thread, so I wondered if you were looking at the same hunt.

I shot a 42.5" there and the whole outfit freaked out. At that time the average was about 37". If it is a fenced property the genetics could have come from anywhere so with proper management the sable could potentially be very good or not.

I am almost sure it would be a private land hunt and possibly high fenced. The question I would have is, is it war vet land? You never know what the quality or quantity of game is on private land. I suggest you ask some very pointed questions.

In my recent discussions with Myles McCallum, he indicated that Kwekwe is approximately 14,000 acres (unfenced) and is located in the center of a much larger conservancy.

465H&H,

Thanks for the response. I did ask CMS specifically about the US embargo and explained that I would definately not consider hunting anywhere that would put me in voilation of this embargo. Their response placated my concerns.

Mark,

You indicated you shot a 42.5" sable there, when you shot your sable was the property fenced? Did you have any concerned with regard to Lacey Act violations? Thanks.

I've been to Chirsa, and Kwekwe. Both fairly dense country, but there was plenty of game.

The midlands conservancy is largely untouched by recent problems. Out of Africa have been hunting on Circle G ranch- the only "taken over" property. Much of the conservancy is american owned.

NB. a 14 year old citizen hunter recnetly shot a 48 1/2" sable there! (not that this is the average by any means!)

I have taken several american ebassy staff hunting there over the years and some sections of that conservancy are superb>

Others are a bit short of water and hanging on the coat tails of the rest of the conservancy's reputation.

The property I hunted was owned by a guy named King and was all high fenced at that time. The hunt was 12 years ago and the whole picture was differnt then.

Ken King is still there and you are right- his property (in the corner of the conservancy) is high fensed on three sides. Should only be two but his neighbror to the east - and american by name Sam Chambliss had a fall out with the conservancy over quota's and high fenced his entire property!

I hunted Ken King's property in '02. My partner missed a decent sable but that was the only mature bull we saw in 6 days.

When we hunted there it was about 20,000 acres and was supposed to be fenced but we saw several situations were the animals ran right through the fence. It hadn't been kept up and the animals didn't seem to pay much attention to it in many places.

We took some other nice animals and the facilities were good.
