I think they saw sales of custom rifles in .375 Weatherby and similar wildcats, and realized they were missing out on some business.
The .375 W has enough poop for anything you might want to do, and the .378 is too much of a good thing for many shooters.
Your rifle will hold one more and perhaps two more rounds than the .378, and could be made up in a lighter rifle.

I once had one, chambered on an M70, perhaps a '66-'67 model, which didn't have the anti-bind lip, and thus would bind up if the bolt were turned too high up upon opening the bolt. I sold it to a friend about a year later.
I read a book on Hal Waugh, a collection of hunting stories by his clients. Very entertaining. I enjoyed it very much. I'm looking for a re-placement, after my little girls, then 3 and 4 rough, tore it up, "reading" it. ~~~Suluuq
I assume that it is simply a matter of running the Weatherby reamer in and out to open up the chamber.
Any riflesmiths on the forum interested in taking on the project? (John Ricks, your phone is ringing) What would it cost and how quickly could it be done?

The best way to improve the 300 gr. bullet in a 375 H&H is to slow it down to 2500 FPS.
All the above is based on using the 375 for its intended purpose of shooting big nasty creatures that stomp, hook, bite or claw.

The 375 H&H will kill anything any other hot shot 375 can out to 300 yards very easily.The 378 Weatherby (with a brake)is exellent past 300 yards,due to it's extremely flat trajectory (on par with a 300 Weatherby).
If you plan on not shooting at any game past 300 yards,get the 375 H&H.If you plan on shooting at game past 300 yards,get the 378.No point in dinking around in the middle of a 400 FPS gap.

I read his book many years ago and belive he used a localy made 270 gr bullet with a sharp cutting shoulder on an otherwise conventional jacket.
Big Nan was his bear stopper despite the 375 Weatherby's dreaded high velocity.
It continually amazes me that people on this forumn shoot a 30-06 with a 180 gr at 2,800 fps but wont shoot a 375 with a 300 gr at the same velocity.
Does that mean we should junk our 30-06's and switch to a reduced load in a .308 Winchester so we can "increase its killing power" by reducing the velocity to 2,500 fps?
Why not make a real giant killer out of the 30 caliber and shoot the 300 Savage? Or better yet, the 30-30 winchester?
Seriously, I dont like double base powders, even very stable ones like RL-15. One big advantage of the improved case is that you can stuff it full of IMR-4831, get 2,700 - 2,800 fps with a 300 gr bullet and never come close to flattening a primer. This is true at any temperature. I even put some of my ammo in tin foil under the hood of my car. Drove around with it there for a few days. Then left it in the sun with the heater on inside my car on the dash near the heat vents in August. I tried every thing to get an over pressure load and could not do it. Try this with RL-15, WW 760, or H-205 in the std 375 and you'll blow yourself up!
After using a 375 improved for 25 years I feel the same way about it Hal Waugh did.

So the .378 Weatherby is not a good choice for anything but long range. Better to increase the bore diameter unless extreme range is what you need.
I have both a .375 Improved and a .375 H&H. I would not do the improved again but it's not a real problem. There is enough shoulder on the old H&H for headspacing if you reload.
The .375 Weatherby died out once. It does not have that great a shoulder anyway with those rounded edges for brass flow so skip it.
The new fat bodied rimmless WSM's and all will obsolete the betlted cartridges thankfully but the DGR cartridges will be the last, if ever, to die out. So get the .375 H&H it's the queen of them all.
