Chinese miners 'poisoning Zim elephants'
http://www.eyewitnessnews.co.za

Eyewitness News | 6 Hour(s) Ago

A Zimbabwean conservation group is claiming Chinese miners are poisoning
elephants in the Zambezi Valley.

The Zimbabwe Conservation Taskforce says it has reports of nine elephants
being killed so far.

The taskforce says the nine elephants were killed at Mushumbe Pools,
reportedly with poisoned loaves of bread.

Johnny Rodrigues believes a Chinese firm looking for uranium was
responsible, but there has been no police confirmation of that.

Rodrigues told Eyewitness News that the ivory has been removed from the
carcasses.

He is now worried that if the carcasses are not burnt, they will poison
other wildlife.

Rodrigues says they have reported the matter to the National Parks and
Wildlife Management Authority, who has promised to investigate.

Amen. The Harare airport was crawling with Chinese when we arrived and when we left last month. I thought that maybe I was in Beijing.

"Peace is that brief glorious moment in history when everybody stands around reloading" - Thomas Jefferson

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

It was one of the reasons Chifuti said so long to Dande Safari area. Now Buzz gets to deal with the mines and these folks.

Dave tell us the other reasons. Never hunted in ZIM but Dande has a reputation as the finest hunting consession in the Zambezi Esc.

When the Chinese make serious inroads into an area rich in wildlife, you can kiss the wildlife good bye. That culture will ultimately force the tiger, the Asiatic black bear, the Idian Rhino etc... to extinction in the wild. And then they'll turn their sights on Africa.

With their booming economy, it will be almost impossible to prevent them from doing it as well. A sad day for all.

Dealing with councils. Pirates who keep moving the financial finish line every year. Their motto " The operator will pay, he will just charge it to the hunters" Miss Dande a bit as we had some good hunts there, but glad we are not dealing with the mess council and their mining friends create.

In actuality the area being mined (or more accurately being explored for mining) in Dande is quite small and does not impede the hunting at all. In the two weeks we were there I did not see anyone from the mining compound, on the roads or any where else in the concession and we covered the whole area.

My understanding is that the poisoning is being done by poachers not the Chinese, and is hardly confined to Dande. They use Temik injected into fruits and the like. The focus is on ivory but obviously Temik is an indiscriminate killer.

I wish the Chinese were not loaning our federal government money. Then I would be able to tell them what I think about this bull.
