Can anyone with experience comment on the following -

How does the "felt or apparent" recoil between the .375 H&H, the .458 Win Mag and .458 Lott feel to the shooter? Is it sharp like the .416 RM or a push like the .375 H&H? Please describe your feelings when shooting.

Thanks for the input.

I have a CZ 375, and a CZ 458 Lott. The 375 has less felt recoil than some lighter calibers in lighter rifles I have shot. To me, the Lott has sharp recoil that takes getting used to, but is manageable. I was given the Lott as a gift about three weeks ago, and have become proficient with it in a fairly short time. Mine has a Decelerator recoil pad on it, and it seems to help. I have fired mine with 458 Winchester Magnum ammo and the recoil is noticeably less than the Lott. BTW, my Lott is fairly light at 9.5 pounds without the scope.

JudgeG and Jorge are coming to my house tomorrow, and we a planning on doing some big bore shooting. I will make sure they post their opinions for you also.

A 375H&H in a lighter rifle can be uncomfortable. Adding a little weight can make a real difference.

My .458 win mag in Ruger #1 has more rock'n'roll -- more shove -- but jab isn't bad for me to my surprise.

My .416 has similar shove, but a little more jab, also in #1.

My .458 Lott in ruger mod 77 has more jab, more shove, than the #1 in .458 win (more than can be easily accounted for by the 10% or so increase in momentum...) Off the bench, the .458 lott is not bad.

None of the above except my .375H&H has recoil reduction.

dogcat, yes the Lott is very sharp like the 416 rem but more...The secret is to hold if very tight in your hands with arms tensed...Crushing handgrips..When the recoil comes your arms take it like shock absorbers..
I have the 458 Lott by Ruger and have fired at least 500 shots out of it over the past 3 years...It can be handled...

With all due respect, this topic is the one most full of mumbo jumbo on AR. Well, one of the most.

For the same stock shape, recoil is math not perception! Can use one of the calculators:

http://huntamerica.com/recoil_calculator/

It is equating the rifle momentum to the sum of the bullet and powder monentum. Lighter rifles give higher recoil velocities and hence the felt recoil is greater.

Recoil perception is whether a 7 lb. 375 H&H is really noticably worse than a 9 lb. 375 H&H. Smiler

There's definitely some difference -- some calibers push, others *pop.* I don't like the new WSM rounds because of the pop -- same reason I don't like shooting 40 S&W even though I enjoy shooting 45 ACP.

Not speaking from direct experience because I haven't shot the 458's but Will is right. Where you get into perception is stock fitting. My Rem 700 in 30-06 weighs 7lb scope and all but kicks noticably less than my Mod 70 30-06 with the factory stock at 9 1/4lbs. The reason is a stock that was fitted to me. I had the same outfit put a stock on my 375, now it's a pussycat Wink

I shoot 30-06, 458 win mag & 458 lott fairly regularly. To me, the win mag & lott have a pleasing shove and smoother, bellowing report; my 30-06 is a sharp recoiling, high pitched bang. (The compensator on the 30-06 probably has alot to do with the rather unpleasant loudness when the trigger is pulled).

I'd rather shoot the 458's. thumb
