Optima tells me it is not... at least not necessary while transfering to Zim. That's of course assuming you don't leave the international portion of the airport. I reccomend their services regardless, too much riding on your guns making the flight. do a search here and you'll find their contact info. it's money well spent.

as long as your are not stopping over is SA and your guns are checked through to nam. there is no paperwork. You are an international citizen at that point and not subject to country regs. If you leave the international terminal or if you pick up your guns then you get the papers with it.

montero, However, it is best to use Optima or Air 2000 to be sure your gun bag makes it onto the next flight.

This is what the regulations say ...... In Transit Passengers (Transiting South Africa) It is critical that you check with and confirm with the airline/s involved before departure to make sure what their procedure is for the transfer of baggage and/or firearms. If the airline does transfer your baggage/firearms, and you have booked them through to the final destination, and you stay in the in-transit area and do not clear South African customs, then you need not go through the temporary import process. If your airline company will not transfer your baggage/guns to your connecting airline/flight, then you must collect your baggage/firearm/s and go through the entire entry process. If this is the case, the South African limitations, requirements, etc. will apply. This also applies if you are overnighting in South Africa before flying on to your country of destination.
