From the Fall 2009 African Sporting Gazette: In Rolf's own words, a safari story. Interesting that he had Zambian PH licence #005 in 1965, and also had a wildlife biology degree from Colorado State University. Hometown was Golden, Colorado. He passed of heart attack at age 66, in January 2008. There's a photo of Mr. and Mrs. Rohwer with daughter Kirsten and son Rolf III. Jack Jonas, Warren Page, and Ted williams also got their mugs included in the photos for Rolf's story layout. Two articles: Hunting Stories of Yesteryear--Zambia 1967: "When Warren Page Got His 100-lb Tusker" by Rolf Rohwer Hunter of Yesteryear: Rolf Rohwer: "A Wife Remembers" By Carol Rohwer Typo: Rolf is on the right above. I had fired my first shot with my Pop's Ted Williams Brand 12 gauge shotgun at 8 years of age, a few years before the worlds greatest baseball hitter went on safari with Rolf. Ted Williams! He could read the lettering on a fastball coming at him, his eyes were so good. He was a WWII instructor pilot. He was a Korean jet fighter pilot. He could feel the difference of .005" in the diameter of his Louisville Slugger bat, and could tell if a bat was 1/2 ounce off the weight spec, by feel. Ted Williams was gifted. He complained, and the Louisville Slugger factory jumped! The world's greatest hitter, hit it off with Rolf. RIP ROLF.

FYI, Carole Rohwer is collecting for publication the short stories, recollections, and writings of Rolf Rohwer for publication. Forwards may include the writing of Franz Coupe and David Shepherd. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Shepherd_(artist) This collection should be in print in less than a year. Sincerely, E Pluribus Unum - where out of many, we will become one.

Virginia Creeper, Great to hear. I look forward to reading more of Rolf's work. There might be more forthcoming in African Sporting Gazette that is not to be missed. And thanks for the link on David Shepherd. High quality stuff there too. I love the aerial perspective in this "Trio," elephants like mountains:

Well according to wikipedia Arica is a port city in Chile with a population of around 200k. That said, I think it was a typo on my part. iPhone touch screen messed me up. So anyhow, did Williams ever hunt Africa too or just arica?

Been there a few times. Nice place. Very dry. Big pelicans who windsurf the shore break...

Man, could ol' Teddy play the game proper! He was a shining example of what a baseball player should be!

Yep, Ted Williams was the original "The Natural," had a gift. He hunted Zambia with Rolf. He was more a fisherman than hunter, but he did it all. Bagged some waterfowl and shagged some women now and then too. Mainly he shagged the baseball more reliably than any other baseball player ever. African Sporting Gazette has Class.

Not to mention the last .400 hitter. Wrote the book on hitting, literally. Very cool that he hunted Africa too.

I clearly remember watching the American Sportsman episode where Ted Williams shot a big Sable then he and Bing Crosby I believe, shot francolin and Guinea fowl. Bu then as a young boy and it being THE ONLY hunting show on TV back then, I think I saw them all... that is until the show became more about skiing, sightseeing, etc... Wasn't it Rolf who sued Federal when one of their rounds didn't stop a lion charge?
