Took this from lion aid Yesterday we were notified by the European Union that on February 5th, the EU will implement new trade regulations on hunting trophies for six species: African lions Polar bears African elephants Southern white rhinos Hippopotamus Argali sheep These regulations will mean that any country for which the EU Wildlife Trade Regulation Scientific Review Group has previously passed a “negative opinion” will now be denied any import permit for hunting trophy exports from the species listed above. A “negative opinion” implies that there is insufficient scientific evidence to show that trophy hunting is not detrimental to the conservation of the species. Click on the link below to read how this will impact on lions, particularly the extremely endangered western African lions, where 90% of the trophies are imported into France. A great victory for lion conservation!!!!!

May be the crooks at lion aid are short of cash, and wanted more "donations" from the stupid, gullible idiots who support them.

Irrespective of LIONAIDS presentation of the events, what is being proposed by the EU is not good. I wonder who is fighting this at the political level? "...Them, they were Giants!" J.A. Hunter describing the early explorers and settlers of East Africa hunting is not about the killing but about the chase of the hunt.... Ortega Y Gasset

http://www.huntingreport.com/w...te.cfm?articleid=699 Heads Up On New Trophy Import Regulations For the EU (posted January 19, 2015) Correspondent Dr. Rolf Baldus sent us this heads up this morning: "In spite of the joint CIC/FACE letter to Vice-President Timmermans of the European Commission on the issue, the Commission just published the new regulations with the following new requirements: The following changes have been included in the new regulations: - An import permit will be required for the import into the EU of hunting trophies from six CITES-listed species: African lion, polar bear, African elephant (for populations not included in Annex A of Regulation 338/97, for which the import permit requirement already applies), Southern white rhinoceros (for populations not included in Annex A of Regulation 338/97, for which the import permit requirement already applies), hippopotamus and argali sheep. - EU Member States will have a clear legal basis to refuse the issuing of an import permit in case of serious doubts as to the legality of a shipment of CITES products, if no satisfactory information on this point is provided by the exporting country. The provisions of the new regulations will enter into force on February 5, 2015." This news was not unexpected. In an Email Extra Bulletin on October 23, 2014, we had warned subscribers that these new regulations might be coming. We followed up with a more detailed story in our December 2014 Email Extra Edition. Sadly, US readers know all too well how capriciously rulings like this can be applied and the detriment they can have to world conservation efforts. EUROPEAN UNION TROPHY IMPORT RULES CHANGED THESE RULE CHANGES AFFECT EU HUNTERS WHO HAVE RECENTLY HUNTED, OR ARE PLANNING TO HUNT, ANY OF THE FOLLOWING: WHITE RHINO, LION, ELEPHANT, HIPPO, ARGALI SHEEP, POLAR BEAR. The European Union (EU) is making it more difficult to import hunting trophies of these six species into the EU. The European Commission has finalized new importation rules that will take effect on 5 February 2015. SCI alerted members of these new rules last year. Under the new rules, a trophy of any of the six species cannot be imported into an EU country without an import certificate issued by the wildlife authority of the importing country. The importing country will refuse to issue a certificate if it considers, on scientific advice, that the hunt was harmful to the species, or that the country where it was hunted has failed to confirm it was legally taken. The wildlife authority has to take into account the views of the EU Scientific Review Group, which are published from time to time. What should you do? If you have hunted these species but have not yet received the trophies, you should contact your outfitter to see if they can be shipped to arrive before these rules come into force (5 February 2015). If the shipment arrives after the rules come into force, it might have to be returned to the country of the hunt to await a permit decision, resulting in extra shipping costs; If you cannot receive your trophies prior to 5 February 2015, you should apply for an importation permit as soon as possible. Be aware when you are booking a future hunt for these species that you will not know for certain in advance whether you will be able to import the trophy; Contact the wildlife authority in your country before the hunt and before the shipment of the trophy so you understand whether you are likely to get an import permit, and what the procedures are. Contact details can be found here: http://ec.europa.eu/environmen...inks_national_en.htm Via the link below, you can find information related to the changes in EU wildlife trade law: http://ec.europa.eu/environment/cites/news_en.htm First For Hunters, Craig Kauffman Signature President Safari Club International Kathi kathi@wildtravel.net 708-425-3552 "The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page."
