On the same theme as the Leopard thread. What could you do with a Lion short of a full body mount that would to it justice? I'm thinking about a full bag to Tanzania with emphasis on cats, buffalo (and maybe a sable or roan). But I don't have the room for a full body lion mount should I be fortunate enough to take one.

I can't think of a better excuse to get a bigger house or to extend the existing one. Smiler

IMHO, a gracefully done full mount is the only way to show the king of beasts.

Every square inch in the office and home is already covered. Kids are about to be out of the house. Would rather spend money on hunts than a new house. But I agree, a lion is special. As is a leopard.

A lion rug just doesn't look right! What else are you going to do? Cut it in half and have it sticking out of a wall? Full mounts do them justice.

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

talk to your taxidermist - there are some really neat poses that will not take up much room. rof instance i did a full mount lion grabbing onto a hyena that doesn't even take up a 6x6 area

My husband almost had his lion done like this mount, but ended up going lifesize. We saw it at Animal Artistry's shop and it is one of the best mounts of any trophy I have ever seen.

i agree with kathy , on a very elegant piece of wood , with perhaps a bit more scallop on the back end to make a better display of the mane ...

At the Muthaiga club in Nairobi there is an old Victorian 1/2 to 3/4 mount lion that looks fabulous. The lion is in the sphinx position, encased in a bamboo framed glass box. The floor of the box and the back (around the lions back and stomach) is covered in dry grass. The glass case is elevated on a rolling table so the viewer and lion are at equal eye level. It's a beautiful idea for a mount that could look fabulous in any trophy room. I'll see if I can find a pic online.

Found a link....but this site wont let me hyperlink. If you scroll down a third of the way on this page, you can see an example of the type of mount I am talking about. I can't find a photo of the actual Muthaiga mount but this is close enough. This one needs the grass rearranged and the taxidermy quality is obviously dated... but I think a modern taxidermist could do a neat job with this idea.

Of course, the down side of a half mount is that it will likely cost 75% of the price of a full mount. By the time you manufacture the glass case and frame and table etc, you may be close to a full mount price. That said, you will save a lot of space and have the thing be a bit more mobile if you want to change up the room at all. For the record, I also have nothing against lion or leopard rugs. Not to offend anyone but I think cat rugs highlight the guy who likes to hunt more than he likes to show others that he has hunted.

JMHO.
