I'll be heading to Namibia in June 2015 for my third safari with Jan du Plessis of Sebra Hunting Safaris. Joining me this time will be my granddaughter Maddie, who turns 10 this week and will be 11 when we head over in June 2105. I'd wager that she's the cutest "hunting buddy" on AR in some time.

Hunting in Africa is an adventure. The number of variables involved preclude the possibility of a perfect hunt. Some problems will arise. How you decide to handle them will determine how much you enjoy your hunt.

Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry
Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure.

But her a decent bolt action rifle with a good scope. Let her enjoy her hunts like a modern person should.

And the leave the idea of those old geezers who woke up one day thinking they are living in the stone age to those who live in Alaska

I know that you will have a great time and she will come home with memories that will stay with her forever.

Thanks for the great ideas Jason. You're right about Maddie's spirit. She was MVP of her 4th grade volleyball team and led the entire 24 team basketball league in scoring. The only reason she wasn't MVP in basketball was her coach was her Dad (my son Ed) and he thought people would complain of nepotism if he named Maddie MVP. She is also a straight A student.I couldn't ask for a more wonderful granddaughter

Not yet. She's a fairly humble girl and she'll probably wait until next spring to say anything to her pals.

SAEED: I've already got Maddie a rifle for her safari: A Thompson Center ICON in .308 topped by a Leupold Vari-X III in 3.5 X 10 X 40. It shoots sub-MOA with my handloads and the recoil is very mild. Although Maddie just turned 10, she is nearly as tall as you are. Her Dad is 6'2" and her Mom is 6' tall. By next June, she will have grown another 3" or 4". To give you some perspective on how tall she is, here's a picture of her with best friend Olivia, who is normal height for a 10 year old. Maddie is 8" or 10" taller.

Bud I just made the mistake of showing my seven year old daughter this post. should have thought that one out. She keeps telling me "Dad just because I'm a girl I still want to hunt Africa like you have".

Thanks, Jeff. We only had two boys for kids, so having a granddaughter who has expressed an interest in going with me to Africa is a pleasant surprise. She especially liked the zebra I got on my first trip:

Some years ago we took my wife's nephew, age 17, to Namibia with us to learn to shoot and hunt. His parents gave us a letter saying he was with us with their permission. Never had anyone ask for it, but a sensible thing to do in this day and age, unfortunately.

Tim: Thanks for the heads up. In addition to her passport I'm planning on bringing a notorized Power of Attorney signed by her parents and I'll also bring a notorized copy of her birth certificate.
