I have friend who's working in Tanzania at the moment. Right now his in the process of securing a resident hunting permit and a rifle license. It seem's it's gonna go through. If so he say he can hunt in local hunting areas close to hunting blocks in Kilombero and Selous.

Anyone who's done it?
I might visit him in Nov or Dec. Hopefully to join him in the hunt. I guess the hunting permit is an individual permit which don't allow me to shoot?? But it would be a great experience just to join him on a self-guided hunt in Tanzania. Sounds too good to be true.

Resident hunters are a huge problem now in TZ.
Ngerengere and other Open areas close to the Selous and the Kilombero Valley have only a few game nowdays. Local hunters make a lot of problems ( Permit overshoots, Hunting at Night and with Motorbikes ) also in Massailand so far i know. Hope TZ will learn from Zambia was happened there few years ago...

I cant recomand any "Resident Hunter" hunting Areas close to Dar, Moshi or Arusha all are heavily poached !

If I understand you right poachers are the problem and not the legal Resident Hunters? There is no diffrence between hunting over quota and hunting without license.

I'm curious: What do the permits cost for residents and what are they allowed to hunt?

I would express caution if you were to join your friend. Should you bump into a patrol, they cantake you to task for being a tourist on a hunt without proper licenses. Its a matter of intepretation of the law and even though you would probably be "leggaly" right if you are just a friend visiting a friend, 9 times out of 10 it is their intepretation that counts!

I know what Mboga is trying to say about resident hunters and resident hunting areas being poached but areas such as Lokisale, Lobo, Longido, Makao, loliondo etc are GCA or Open Area and by default resident hunting areas too. And these are some of the very BEST hunting areas for certain species.

Residents can take
buff, bushbuck, duiker, dik dik, wildebeest, impala, hartebeest, gazelles (3 varieties), reedbuck (3 varieties), topi, eland, steinbuck, oribi and probabaly one or two others I've missed.

prices are cheap for residents and even cheaper for indigenous hunters!

I have heard of people (not from the US) going on these hunts and even shooting Lion, Elephant etc. I believe its poaching in some shape or form.

God Forbid ! Unless they are from within the Inner Circle All other are subject to the LA.

So if not from the USA then where?

This kind of hunting quite simply equates to poaching.
