In some of these adventures, especially dangerous game, there is a real risk of getting hurt. Have you seen a PH get hurt or come close to it? In 2005, I took my sons on a plains game hunt in the RSA. We went with Peter Thormahlen. If you know Peter, he is a real character. On the first day, we put the slip on a group of ostriches. My youngest son, Michael, shot and hit this big male with a 30-06. It didn't fall. While clearly hit, it started to run off. I pulled my 416 off my shoulder and rolled it while it was running off. We approached the downed bird. It didn't move but was clearly still breathing. Peter had this bright idea. He was going to grab it by the head and have the skinner stick his knife in the bird's head. Peter grabbed the bird just below the head. When he did, all hell broke loose. The ostrich came to life. This feet were kicking every way possible. Peter now has this thing with both hands yelling at the tracker to help him. The bird was beating him up pretty badly. Finally they both subdued the bird. My sons and I were standing there laughing like crazy. Then I noticed that something was wrong with Peter's boot. The ostrich had got him so hard that the foot had cut right through the boot and his sock right over the Achilles tendon. Remarkably, he was not hurt. Had Peter been wearing running shoes, this thing would have severed his Achilles tendon. I definitely have this on video. I am going to look and see if I have a picture I can post. | ||

Well, of course I wasn't there, but that video of Mike Payne nearly getting the client's .416 Rigby in his back looked pretty damn close to me. A PH who posts a lot over at Campfire. My buddy was hunting with him and I was hunting with another PH. My buddy wounded a kudu bull. We heard the shot and went over to see if they needed any help. The kudu was down but still breathing. My buddie's PH stood on the horn that was lying on the ground and held on to the horn what was up in the air. My PH was going to stick the kudu in the back of the head with a knife. He stuck the tip of the knife in and was digging around trying to get it between the vertebre and the skull. The kudu decided he had had enough of this fun and stood up. For some reason the other PH did not let go and got a nice rodeo ride. He did not get hurt but could have.
