Uganda: UWA Gets Sh613 Million From Sport Hunting
Nicholas Kajoba
10 March 2009
:
Kampala — THE Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) realised sh613m from sport hunting in Lake Mburo National Park last year, the area's conservation manager has said.
During a tour of the park by the Makerere University tourism student's team, Augustine Masereka said UWA had introduced new tariffs for all national parks and reserves.
The students were guided on a boat trip, nature walk and game drive. National parks are categorised as A and B.
Adult East African visitors to Category A parks will pay sh5,000, while foreigners will pay $20 (sh39,600). Children aged five to 15 will pay $10 (sh19,800), while residents will pay sh2,500.
Category A parks include Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth, Lake Mburo, Rwenzori, Bwindi, Mgahinga and Kidepo.
Under Category B, the entrance fee is sh3,000 for residents and $25 (sh49,500) for foreigners. Category B parks include Semliki, Mt. Elgon and Semlik Wildlife Reserves.
Special groups get a 30% discount, while foreign students with valid identity get a 25% discount. The UWA executive director, Moses Mapesa, said guest houses, bandas and tents would be privatised soon.

Philip A.Journalists having an uncanny ability to miss small details, it may be useful to specify that what Mr. Kajoba forgot to mention is the word "AREA". There is a sport hunting operation in Lake Mburo NP AREA, on communal and private land, but NOT in the NP.
Although I don't see why hunting in a NP should not be allowed when game populations become excessive, this is not the case.
Anti-whatever are always quick at screaming without verifying their data or sources, better not give them too many excuses!
Now, for the facts... Since the sport hunting operation was initiated a few years ago, as a pilot project, game numbers have shot up. Have just read the full 100+ pages report, and participated in a UWA workshop on the subject.
The success of sport hunting as a means of conservation is clearly established, and the few snags are being worked out. Sport hunting is being extended to other areas in Uganda, with the aim of directly benefiting local communities, so as to give them a real incentive in conserving wildlife.
Up to 75% of trophy fees are to be paid directly in community-managed accounts.

ozhunterHopefully another African hunting destination for the future.
One can only hope that with Uganda's efforts to introduce this form of Tourism sport hunting - conservation that Kenya might wake up.

Philip A.So far, quotas were issued for buffalo, hippo, bushbuck, impala, eland, duiker, oribi, reedbuck, topi, warthog, waterbuck, zebra, and baboon.
As more hunting areas are opened, other species will be added. Leopard will be available, as well as croc (at least for PAC).
Also present in the country are giraffe, orix, roan, klipspringer, hartebeest, cheetah, lion, and elephant.

Die Ou JagterPhillip, are there not also Sitatunga? Hopefully they will be on permit some day soon.
13 March 2009, 18:25
Philip A.Yes, there are sitatunga. Must be plenty of them too, as a poacher got 12 in just a few days, without even going far from the main road.
There are extensive marshes north of Lake Victoria, with mosquitoes the size of a B17... Never been too much of a swamp fan myself.

cable68Were lesser kudus present in Uganda in the past?
Could they be in the future?

kevin hendersonPhilip,
What can you tell us about the buffalo hunting in Uganda?

Philip A.Lesser kudu is present. As for buffalo hunting, they do have a quota around Lake Mburo NP, maybe at Lake Albert Lodge too (Bruce Martin, nice chap). All other areas are still under evaluation both by UWA and the companies who got the management agreements.
From what I remember, in the Western part of Uganda buffs are huge, but the last time I went there was 15 years ago.
Large herds in the North East (Karamoja), I'll have a better idea of what is available there by next month.
However, there are buffs almost everywhere, not really an endangered critter...
The only operations already running, from what I know, are Lake Albert Lodge and Game Trails. Other Companies are still doing preparatory work, and planning pilot hunts. Rains will seriously start April-May in the Northern areas, and one can probably expect hunts to be offered for the end of 2009.

ozhunterPhilip A.,
What is the safety situation in rural Uganda?
15 March 2009, 21:12
Philip A.Oz, I may not be the most qualified person to assess the security situation of a particular location: I spent a few years in and out of the Niger Delta, and most any place looks like paradise to me...
But Uganda as a whole is a pretty safe and quiet place. Certainly better than SA, and than downtown Nairobi!

Philip A.Actually, what I meant was:
"I spent a few years in and out of the Niger Delta, and now most any OTHER place looks like paradise to me..."
