Tembo, my first trip to Africa was to Natal and the lodge I stayed at was built to house the crew of the movie and KB would not stay at this new facality but stayed at a private home in the area. She would not use the well water for bathing but had to have bottled water to bath in. Knowing this tid bit of info just takes something away from the movie, at least for me.

Interesting info. Not surprising, though. Hollywood has more than their fair share of mental midgets. ______________________ Age and Treachery Will Always Overcome Youth and Skill

I enjoyed "Mountains of the Moon", about the Burton / Speke expedition to the Nile headwaters. For that matter, how about Spenser Tracy in "Stanley and Livingstone." And the ones that started my facination with Africa - Saturday afternoon w, Johnny Weismuller as Tarzan! A nation with dogs and whiskey beats Nazis. Africa has been pretty much cheated by the movies in my opinion. The stories that could be told are many. One of the few good movies on Africa was the Ghost and the Darkness, and it left a lot to be desired as far as historical accuracy. I remember thinking when I watched it the first time and Val Kilmer was being chased by the lion, "wow, what a thrill that would be!" Little did I know that a few years later I would be enjoying that same thrill! Nothing I have experienced is quite like a good old lion charge. A lot of really good African movies could be made if Hollywood would just do it.

For a good laugh, you can't beat Abbot and Costello in Africa Screams. I still crack up inside when I think of some lines in it (Gad, what a hunt!) I just saw Tears of the Sun last weekend, and liked it a lot. I do think Ghost and the Darkness was my favorite, though. ============================== "I'd love to be the one to disappoint you when I don't fall down" --Fred Durst

WyoJoe: Right - John Henry - same actor as in the movie too. I'm glad I'm not the only one who remembers "Cowboy in Africa" I sure wish it would come back in re-runs somewhere. It's probably not PC enuff. Lance Lance Larson Studio lancelarsonstudio.com

Tembo...I saw it at least 6 times as a pre-teen. Loved it all including the "bouncing" native girls. It helped fuel my early interest in archery and in Africa and I actually got to meet and shoot with Howard Hill while I was in college in eastern Pennsy. Quite a man and I don't think anyone at the shoot could shoot his big bow. There is also a "campy" safari movie that has a lot of good scenes. The star was Harry Carey as the PH and the client was a very, very young Duncan Renaldo who later became famous as one of the many who played The Cisco Kid on TV. The good scenes were actually shot in Africa but most of the movie was shot on a back-lot and spliced in...the African sequences showed a lot of animals and some big stuff being shot with double rifles. It must have been one of the early talkies .... wish I could think of the name. DB Bill aka Bill George

I agree. I am pretty sure it is the original "Trader Horn" as well. There was a lousy remake with Rod Taylor from the 60's or 70's in which they incorporated a lot of footage from Stewart Grangers "King Solomon's Mines". A poor substitute for both original films, IMO. RCG

I had about forgotten about "Cowboy in Africa". I loved to watch that show when I was a kid. One of my favorites was the one where they had a rodeo in Africa, and the bull riding was on cape buffalos, with Chuck Conners being the champion bull rider. They used black rodeo bulls with fake horns added to try to make them look like buffalo. Seems like they had team roping with elands. What a laugh! I would like to see that again.

The original Trader Horn did star Harry Carey senior. It was made in 1935 and was the first original length African movie filmed in Africa. A lot of the game footage was filmed or dubbed from Osa and (husband's name I forgot) Johnson, very early wildlife videographers. Since I started this thread I have very much enjoyed the input. I didn't take a poll, but it looks like Hatari would have one the prize. Do any of you remember Legend of the Lost? That also starred John Wayne with Sophia Loren. It was filmed in 1962 on location at Leptis Magna in the Kingdom of Libya. How the hell did I remember that, you ask? I was living in Tripoli at the time.

Just FYI: The Martin and Osa Johnson Safari Museum http://www.safarimuseum.com/ Some of their films are available in the online store. Although it looks corny by today's standards, I enjoyed "Simba: The King of the Beasts" (1928). -Bob F.

All of us that really appreciate African hunting need to get together and make some archive DVD"s that may insure that the hunting heratige is saved for us as well as those that we precede. I know that there could be legal issues but there should be some way to get'er done. Any suggestions?? square shooter

Cowboy in Africa had some good lassoing footage ,but had a anti hunting element in it which i found annoying, a bit like the ''Tarzan''series with Ron Ely ,where Jai is given a rifle by some hunters, which he then decides to smash ,and then is patted on the back by''Tarzan''
