Could l get a recommendation for a good starting book from J.A.Hunter as l have never read his work before and l believe from reports that his writings can be a little hard to follow.

HUNTER. Safari Press puts it out. Mine says $24.95 on the flyleaf. 1952, then 1980 copyrights.

I don't think they are hard to follow. All of them are good.

Hunter is his autobiography, it is not a novel even though some parts read like a novel.

My Granddad read it to me when I was 5 yrs old---started my fascination with Africa.

Sadly he died two years later and never got to go himself.

Hunter!! Yes my first hunting book on Africa when I was about 13. I found a copy for myself many years later but a friend liked it so much he just kept it! Then I found a second hand one in Portland during a visit & I bought it.

Very well written.

Hunter is an amazing book. Hunter's Tracks was written by a ghost writer and (in my opinion) it sucks. His first is a classic and the two big tusks pictured there reside now in Kansas.

It's so good to know I'm not alone. Should our wives get together to form a support group? Probably a bad idea.

I agree HUNTER. It is a riveting book that you won't be able to put down.

I have a first edition in well worn condition without a dust jacket that I packed around in the briefcase and pack hunting....I will sell it for a reasonable offer.

I own the full set great shape...including #1 in its snakeskin like covering...others with dust jackets....all first editions....not SP Reprints!! Smiler

PM me if you would like to negotiate on it!

Cheers,

Well that should give it a boost. Wink

I think that Jim, and many of us of the same vintage will have read Hunter and have had it make an impact on us. I know it sure as hell did for me.

The book is good, the tales are even better, l will say it was enjoyable reading and l will certainly look to purchase more of Hunters books. To be honest, l have not read anything on par with Corbett, so if someone could recommend an absolute classic from an era gone by l would love to know.

Hold on, you .500 maniacs. Hunter also loved his .475 No.2 with which he did fine work. Although I own both I can sit on the fence and throw rocks! Big Grin
