I just returned from a mtn lion hunt with dogs. While at the guide's house, we watched a video of leopard hunting with dogs and then at the airport I read Craig's article about it. Kind of got me curious. Who is offering these hunts and who has done them? I see that Mark Young has something new he's offering. Looks interesting. Are there any DVD's available on this? Thanks. _______________________________

I've done one in Namibia last year. The hunt was through Vaughn Fulton. I've never sheep hunted, but I've got to believe that my hunt in Namibia was close. I've also hunted mountain lions several times in the west. They are similar hunts, but really not the same. It a lot different when you know the leopard could turn on you or the dogs at any time. Pretty exciting!

I've corresponded with Vaughan regarding other hunts. Was your hunt successful? Feel free to PM me with details or direct me to more info. Thanks. _______________________________

I did a hunt this July in Namibia, up around Otjiwarongo, about 150 miles N. of Windhoeck. It was arranged by Fanie Steyn of Thaba Mmoyo Safaries (asteyn@mega.co.za)in RSA, and conducted by Born to Hunt Safaries (safari@bornhunt.co.za) owned by Tony Cilliers. The farm we were on was about 500 square miles (Yes, 500 square miles!). This was absolutely a fair chase endeavor. We got the cat on the tenth day, with four days left. I hunted leopard in Zim the old fashioned way the previous year, and it is my very strong opinion that pursuing chui with hounds is far more sporting than waiting to drygulch him from a blind. It also requires immensely more physical effort. The only tougher hunt I've ever done was Rocky Mountain Goat, the most underrated trophy animal in the western hemispohere, if not the world. I'm 63, and I was about done in by day 10. Fanie's specialty is cats, and he is superb. This was my 5th hunt with him. (He came along.) Gert Oelofson ran the pack with assistant handler Gemekule. Gert has 18 years experience. I would really have a difficult time accurately describing the skill and monumental effort these guys put out. It was a phenomenal hunt, extremely exciting. You will never get me back in a blind. PMs welcome for more info.

We do, in Botswana in the Kalahari Central Reserve. (Yes Reserve). The second largest national park in the world, and by far the least developed. One of those few places where you can get lost and they will never find you. Hi yukon I offer these hunts on various properties in Namibia at US$ 10 000, including 10 days hunting and the trophy fee. We still hang out baits, to get tracks to follow with the hounds. It is a pretty exiting hunt, and most people doing it after a baited leopard has the opinion of Brice, that they will not do it any other way again. Contact me if you are interested in more details. I remember of an article in Petersen bowhunting mag last year about a doghandler whose name's PEACOCK and the team ZimbabweHOund. He used to hunt with bowhuntingsafari but is not referenced in the last week issue of this company. peacock Mr Peacock is working for Roger Withall too. I am aware of a French PH in Zimbabwe who is a specialist of treeing leopard : Jerome Siffredi (not Rocco). jerome J B de Runz Be careful when blindly following the masses ... generally the "m" is silent

Try Bushman Safaris in Bulawayo. Theo Bronkhorst has an excellent pack of dogs and has been hunting Leopard as long as anyone in Zimbabwe with great success. He has areas in the Turk Mine area and also has a dangerous game area in the Matetsi. He can be reached at bushman_zim@yahoo.com. Don't know what the quaotas are this year but he usually has a good quota. His rates are competative and his camps well run. SCI Life Member NRA Patron Life Member DRSS

Yukon, Contact Tommy Morrison of Sporting Int'l in Houston. He books for Mark Butcher of Matupula Hunters in Zim. "Butch", along with Warwick Evans (a whacking great South African from the Eastern Cape) can show you how it's done. I hunted with Butch behind Warrie's "Mapassa Lion Pack" between Plumtree and the Bots border in '02, taking a dandy tom. I went into the hunt with an open mind, and was pleasantly surprised. The area we hunted is rough as a cob with tall kopjes surrounded by mopane timber. To make things more exciting, there's a tall understory of malalongwe under the mopane cutting visibility down to powder burn range. Gives you pause when you hear the hounds cries coming closer and you realize that there's a really pissed spottie between you and them! It was a helluva good time...just not one I'll likely repeat. There's big tusker somewhere in my immediate future! Didn't post a report, but I'd be happy to tell the story. Sure, PM me your e-mail and I'll give you all the gory details... Pics are problematic...didn't do anything digital; only 35mm and video. Still, we might be able to work somethin' out... Mark DRSS "I always take care to fire into the nearest hillside and, lacking that, into darkness." - the late Dr. Hunter S. Thompson

I would agree with 218 Bee. I ran into Mark at his booth at the DSC. I have never had the opportunity to hunt with him but we have several common friends in Zim. He was really excited about the leopard with dogs hunt & talked about it for several minutes. After spending fifteen days in leopard blinds in Matetsi, I would seriously consider going this route.
