One of my colleagues that I worked closely with did not come in today. He passed away at 62. Perfect health, but slipped and hit his head a few weeks ago and wouldn't go to the doctor....maybe that was it, don't know yet.

Life is short and precious- go now- hunt now, hug your kids and kiss your dog....

My father told, who died at 46 years of age, told me before his death, "Don't do what I did, get out and do the things you want to, withing reason." He kept putting off great trips for himself so that he could do them when my brother and I were old enough to take along with him. He didn't live long enough to do it.

Good reminder! Several years ago a good friend and I sat down and started what; since the movie could be called our "Bucket list". (Hunts we wanted to take before we kicked the bucket!)

I realized that just to achive my top twenty from a much longer list of want-2's I'd need to take at least one a year. In order to get the tough ones checked off before age 70 and or the enivitable reckoning my body will eventually demand in return for the abuse I've subjected it.

Since then I've tried to take at least 2 a year off my list and the list just continues to grow.

My buddy's list was considerably shorter but so was his bodies patience!

Best Regards

I know one guy that refers to his hunting as his estate reduction program. I'm just working to live vs living to work and figure if it comes to it I can always finish out as a Wallmart greeter!

I once asked an elderly successful businessmen a question, What is the secret of life and happiness?

His response was "fill your life with memories."

I didn't start the Africa hunts soon enough,,,always to much work or college expense, etc. My dad died at 62 as well,,, was in perfect shape, fell over dead in our office with a brain aneuyrism. POOF? we had planned on doing a bunch of trips,,, plans are just plans,, since then anytime my son wants to do a hunt,,, I make it happen. I work to keep this body "huntable". Football and a really bad knee make it tougher,,but,,, I can make more money,, I can't make more time... Watch out Australia,, those water buffaloes are next on the bucket list this summer,, then back to Africa....

you can make more money, you can not make more time

I turn the big 50 this year. Started the african addition in 03. Been on 10 trips to Africa, 2 Alaska, 4 Mexico, 1 Canada one to NZ
and several out west. I am a blessed man.

My father has alzheimers and my mother asked me to get his guns and hunting equipment to my home. In going through his guns and gear. Really a lifetime of hunting it struck me how selfish I have been. I have my office full, and a 25 x 24 den full of trophies, Big 5, two ele.
2 buff. What is my daughter going to do with all this crap?

My wife and my daughter have been on 3 of these hunting trips with me. By far the best ones.

I guess it took my father's illness to cure me of the African addition. I mean I will go back but not without my family. All trophies will be Euro mounts, not wasting time with taxidermy any more, after two trophies I have on the way are done.

I hear what your saying about hunt now and I agree but take the ones that mean most to you with you. Make memories with your loved ones. It will mean I take less trips because of the expenses, but it will be worth it.

Thanks for letting me ramble, and I hope you all don't kick me off the site because the african fever has broken.

Sorry to hear about your friend. Life IS to short. I had colon cancer 3 years ago. Something like that will open your eyes. Been to Africa twice since then and out west 3 times. We have a deposit on a Namibia leopard and lion hunt for this July. We all know that story.

Well guys, taking ya'lls advice I started my international hunting career 2 yrs ago, at 24, and now I'm looking at going to NZ this year and possibly back to africa for my 3rd trip. I feel incredibly lucky to get to have the experiences.

I had the colon cancer scare in 2008 - I am fortunate that it turned out to only be Diverticulitis. Made me stop and really think about what is important! Went to Africa in 2007 and plan to book a trip back for next year with my son.

50 is rapidly approaching for me as well - and I plan to spend as much time hunting as I can scrape together the funds to support!!!

I don't post much here but read nearly every thread...

See you in Reno!

Sorry to hear of your friends untimely passing. It is always good advice to live life to the fullest.
I'm taking that advice, and starting to pack now for another trip this month. If you are willing to travel, there is great hunting 12 months of the year.

404J I agree, but there other things:
Life is short,
and we do not have too much time
to gladden the hearts
of those who travel the way with us;
So be swift to love,
and make haste to be kind,
And may the Divine Mystery
Who is beyond our ability to know
but who made us, and Who loves
us, and Who travels with us,
Bless us and keep us in peace.

Peter.

Be without fear in the face of your enemies. Be brave and upright, that God may love thee. Speak the truth always, even if it leads to your death. Safeguard the helpless and do no wrong;

I had "more important things to do..." with a wife and raising kids and a house payment. At 58 I was able to retire and as my wife says "not it's our turn". I plan to retire just about broke and leave her the place and the insurance money.

You are absolutely right. You still have the fever, but the right priorities. Plan with the family. Go when and where all of you can go, and I'll bet Africa will still be in the family plan more often than you think.
