Has anyone used the Burris Signature Select Safari Scopes (1.75X-5X-32mm) with the "Posi-Lock" feature on big-bore rifles? Specifically the Lott?

I emailed Burris as follows, sounds good, but note the key word "should":

Q: Hello, Has your "Posi-Lock" system been tested under the recoil and acceleration of the Lott at Hornady factory loads?

R: Mr. Campbell, All Burris scopes are built to withstand the heaviest of recoil and securing system of the Posi-lock should definitely hold bullet impact on the Lott. The Posi-lock system removes the back lash out of the adjustment system and locks the guide tube in a three point vise ensuring it will not move under recoil. Thank you, Burris Company

Q2: Have your product engineers tested it specifically on the .458 Lott?

R2: This particular scope was designed for Lott type cartridges and will fulfill your needs for an optic to withstand the recoil.

John Barness gave a real good explanation of the posi-lock. Basically, they had to add it to the erctor assembly because it would not hold up under recoil. I don't know, I'd just stick with a leupold in a Lott. jorge

I've talked to Lon Paul and Darcy Echols about Lott recoil and scopes. It would seem they can't really recommend any specific scope for the Lott.

I bought a brand new Leupold 1.5 X 5 last year from Premier reticles, and it failed under the recoil of my CZ 375. I have a Burris scope on another rifle (7mm-08) and it is great. Don't know about the Posi-Lock or the Safari model, but Burris in my opinion are underratted.

I am a Leopold snob but beleive it or not, this year I took a Bushnell Elite on my .416. I had a 1.74-6x fail twice, so while the scope was in Leupold's shop, I put the Elite on. Had no problems with it while practicing, so that is waht I took to Tanz.

The Posi lock does have one drawback - you might get a slight zero shift when you tighten the posi screw, because it loads against the erector assy.

He has had Zeiss and Tasco world class fail..

Twice I have cracked the front lens of my Leupold 1.5/5x with my Ruger 458 Lott..

Not a Lott, but have the Safari Select 1.75 x 5x w/posi-lock, on my Ruger RSM in 416 Rigby...so far so good after ~150 rounds.

I had this same scope mounted on my 375 H&H and went ~200+ rounds without any problems before I took it off and put it on my Ruger.

The eye relief is ample and optics very bright.

Mike: This is probably a dumb question but have you checked the position of the front ring with respect to where the lens sits inside the tube? Scopes do fail, but lens cracking is so rare that I wonder given the length of the ruger action as to whether the front ring is bearing down on the lens. jorge

The mounting cuts in the Ruger rifle allow the scope to be mounted just behind the ring..The scope is slid as far forward as it can go..
I am going to see if I can get them cut little farther towards the rear ofthe action..a quarter of an inch I think would do it..

The Posi-Lock scopes are a right pain in the neck to sight in. So if you do decide to take one of these to Africa, make sure you take extra rounds in case you need to resight your scope.

I think Jorge is right on the money with the 1.5-5X Leupold. Matt at Hill Country said they discouraged people from using the above scope on some rifles because the front lens was right under the front ring. They like Leupolds but suggested I use a 1.75-6X. I don't know but I'll know soon.

I think Jorge is right I broke thw front lens on an old Weaver K-2X the same way. when the front ring was tightened I actually heard the lens crack! This was on a very long Mauser Magnum action!

Gents: I have a 1.5X5 Leupold on my 416 Ruger Rigby. When I installed it I was extremely careful to position the scope as far forward as I could. I think I only have about 1/4" clearance between the power ring and the aft scope ring. I used Warne mounts and was assured they would not grab on the front lens. It can be done, but you have to be very very careful. Did the same thing with my 30mm tube 1.5X5 Leupold (illuminated reticle) on my 338. I think I'm on solid ground that's the culprit for lenses cracking. jorge

I have had no dramas with the big cz guns and the 2.5x compact leupold I just ensure that the scope is as far forwards as it can be and the "gold ring" is about a 1/4 of an inch out infront of the forward scope ring.

Have not cracked a lense yet and I think the 2.5x compact is a good choice for the lott, this same scope is on my friends and my .585 Nyati's as well and neither of us of had any dramas.

I have, use and love my Burris Signature Safari Posi Lock on my .416 Rigby. I handlaod my Rigby to near 416WBY ballistics and so can say that these Scopes can take a lot of abuse. Yes they are a pain in the butt to get sighted in, but once done, it is unlikely that you will have to make any adjustments to it, ever. Word of caution.... do not over tighten the posi lock feature, I broke a lens by doing this. Burris fixed it for free, but it put my scope out of commision for awhile.

I have a scope story, but its about a Swarovski. Upon arriving in TZ this July I found the elevation/illum. cap on my 1.5x6 Swaro battered down to the point the threads were stripped on the cap. As I was going thru Dulles TSA had to see the rifles but wouldn't let me handle them. When they closed my case back they positioned the rifle in the case so that the cap was up hard aganist the side of the aluminum case. The rifle made the entire trip to TZ being hammered. The quality of the scope was that it held zero (lucky for me) at test fire in camp. When I got home I called Swaro service and told them what happened and they advised me to send it in. I did and they called me back in a couple of days and told me it had to go back to Austria for repair and it would take 8 to 10 weeks. I told them I was returning to TZ in Nov. and I needed a scope. To my suprise they said no problem and sent me a new 2.5x10 Illum. with the same retical pattern as a free loaner. I had it the next day. Pretty damn good service I'd say. I know they are kinda pricy but overnighting me a loaner to take to TZ could have saved my hunt in a pinch, I guess there is more to scopes than initial price...........JJ

By memory, someone here on AR maybe about a year ago said he'd had luck with putting some goop (I took that to be what I'd call silastic)
under the front ring, and then not tighten it up too much. Said it didn't move for him, and stopped the cracking.

With the posilock once the gun is sighted in and the posilock is engaged then shoot another group and make the necessary adjustment as engaging the posilock will move the POI a bit..

I used Burris for a while at one time, but went back to Leupold...I just love Leupolds, I have hunted the 4 cornors of the earth with Leupolds, tried most of the others, and always went back to Leupold..

If you cracked the Lens on your Leupold then its because the front ring is over the lens and when you tighten them it cracks the Lens...An extension ring is in order or a 2x7 will solve that problem...The spacing of the Ruger is wrong or the length of the Leupold is wrong, take your pick as to who messed up...Another alterantive is to find a good used 3X Leupold and use it....

The Scope if fully forward in the Warne QR mounts..The gold ring is showing with not much to spare and that is where the lens is...I am going to do some rexaming of scope and mounts..Especially with long eye relief...
458 Lott demands it..
