I am wondering if anyone has had any experience with the 45-70 for dangerous game. I have a Winchester 1886 that is modern made to modern tolerances and strengths. I know Garret Ammunition makes some very stout rounds for the 45-70. Most people I have spoken to have shot these only in the Marlin Guide Gun. I would really like to take this gun for cape buffalo. What are everyone's thoughts? Thanks.

I see you are either a new member or someone whom does not post often !!!

If you are deadly serious then you will have opened a can of worms, if you are just testing the guests patience (from past experience) on the subject, which has been beaten to death on previous occasions, then good luck to you

take care, enjoy the responces from those with the knowledge and have fun on the forum

I have no experience with shooting dangerous game but I know that the marlin 45/70 is a better killer of big game than the .458 lott due to it's reduced bullet weight 400 gr V 500 Gr and it's lower sectional density as well as it's lower velocity.

People who own .458 lotts, .416 Rigby's, the big 500's are all realising this now and ready to trade up......not to mention the much faster follow up shots one has wit ha marlin lever gun Big Grin

Bwanna, if you use the search function on this forum, you will find lots of discussion has taken place already. Personally, I would not want to use a 45-70 lever gun on DG. If you decide to do so, get some pictures and post them, please.

Good Shooting!
