Does anyone know how the 1886 of Doug Turnbull really performed on elephant-penetration especially? Australia I love a sunburnt country, A land of sweeping plains, Of ragged mountain ranges, Of drought and flooding rains. I love her far horizons, I love her jewel-sea, Her beauty and her terror The wide brown land for me!

Check out Martin Pieter's video... one of his hunters takes elephant and buff with the .475 Turnbull. When I questioned Martin about the rifle's performance he said he was pleasantly surprised at how well the cartridge settled the big nasties. I bought one at DSC last January and it is a fun rifle to shoot. It wouldn't be my "go-to" rifle but I wouldn't hesitate to carry it on safari. I would dearly love to have an eight pound S/S double rifle chambered for that cartridge! It would be perfect for brown bear hunting in Alaska's inside passage islands thick rain forests. The cartridge is certainly up to the task IMO! The lever rifle being discussed here is a fine rifle, and I'd love to have Turnbull build me a custom one with a 22 inch barrel and a short tube magazine to hold one in the chamber and four in the tube! The reason for this is, with a fulley loaded long tube magazine as the rounds are fired the ballance of the rifle changes drasticlly, but with the short tube and shorter barrel all the ammo weight is between the hands balancing the rifle much better for instinctive shooting in close quarters! IMO, much better for dangerous targets. ....Mac >>>===(x)===> MacD37, ...and DUGABOY1 DRSS Charter member "If I die today, I've had a life well spent, for I've been to see the Elephant, and smelled the smoke of Africa!"~ME 1982 Hands of Old Elmer Keith
