I am thinking about bringing my .45 next trip: does the standard firearms form we receive, on arrival, entitle me to carry my .45 concealed, or, would I be guilty of UCW?

I think you are going to have a lot of trouble trying to get a handgun into Zim. Let alone concealed carry. Doing time in any lock-up in Africa doesn't do much for me.

You can bring one into the country but only for hunting:

I have taken a handgun into Zim on all 3 of my Safaris.

The problem IS getting through Joberg with it. The last 2 times I went, SA would allow only a scoped HUNTING handgun into and or through SA.

It would also be best that your PH get a Permit from Zim Parks authorizing you to handgun hunt.

Also a semi auto is a no go.

Takd a scoped revolver, when you get to camp in Zim take the scope off.

Put it back on when you leave.

First two times I entered Zim in Harare, no issue, last time I went in at Vic Falls, the young man there did not know the rules, the PH and I had to educate him. Now he knows the rules.

Bryan, my suggestion is that if concealed carry is that important to you....don't go to Africa. Is it your first trip? I've taken my wife, my elderly mother, and my (adult) son to Africa (them to Namibia, me to RSA, Zim, Tanzania, and Mozambique)on a couple ocassions. I otherwise conceal carry most everyday of my adult life in USA. I've never felt threatened anywhere in Africa as I've always had a rifle close at hand (isn't that the purpose of a handgun...to fight your way to a rifle?). I've been through some check-points in Africa and packing a concealed handgun would for sure be on their list of no-no's. I was in RSA on 9-11 and when I subsequently left RSA they got goofy about me packing a detachable Zeiss scope in my carry-on that they thought was a potential weapon. This was while tourists carried 'clubs' (knob-curries??? the whackers Africans carry to kill leopards in close combat). A high-school pal of mine (also a USA lawyer) got 'arrested' at a Zim roadblock without any gun issues and it took him nearly two days and the US embassy to get it sorted out. You want to avoid that.

Un-complicate your visit to Africa and don't try to push the envelope. Have fun...it's a wonderful experience.

Bryan

Just get Gordon to do the paperwork for temp import before you arrive. Any handgun is acceptable for 'Hunting back up'. It does not need to wear a scope, and can be a semi auto. last client I had bought a standard Glock 10mm.

Flying into Harare, there are few problems. Flying into Byo or the falls...make sure the PH has the paperwork in advance!!! In Harare, it is easy enough to get the controller of firearms on the line who will tell awkward customs officials how to do their jobs. Out of Harare, The customs officer makes up the law as he goes along until somebody produces a permit to tell him otherwise.

Seriously though, since you are in Zim so often, why do you not a) Join the local gun club and then b) License and leave a pistol of your choice in Zim?

Join Cleveland pistol club- chairman is an American and editor of African Hunter magazine Wink fishunt@zol.co.zw

You can then apply for an import permit -which guarantees you will be given a license or you could buy one in country...know of a nice comander sized safari arms for sale in Harare...
