A friend gave me an old copy of "I Married Adventure" signed by Osa Johnson; it was an interesting read, although a bit dated of course. They were ahead of their time, not many folks going to Africa back then.

I enjoyed all of her books until I learned that she also spent a lot of time on the lecture circuit, lambasting hunting and hunters.

To her way of thinking, it was fine to purposely provoke lions, elephants and rhinos so she could drop them in front of her husband's cameras, but it was terrible that others would kill wild animals for any reason.

We must give her one thing, though. She had to have been an awfully good shot because she killed a lot of big, dangerous critters up close.

Incidentally, is there a reason this thread appears here and not on the Books and Video forum? Mrs. Johnson has been discussed a bunch over the past couple of years down there.

Trevia:

Does anyone know what the name she was given by her parents means? ("OSA")

I was just a boy when I went to their museum in Kansas. It was great! Didn't know much about Africa then but I was inspired.

Never worry about theory as long as the machinery does what it's supposed to do.

There is a gentleman that posts here (BFaucett) who has acquired Osa Johnson's 9.3x62 Oberndorf Type A Mauser. The thread itself is an excellent read.
