The UPS man just delivered 3 pairs of Cabelas Grand Portage Cargo shorts this afternoon and I am very impressed with them so far, they were advertised in the Cabelas Club flyer. 100% cotton with 6 pockets, seem to be very well made, and very comfortable. I bought these in Khaki and Olive to wear in Zambia in September. The Olive is a darkish green and the Khaki is a mid-range subdued brown, not bright at all, just about right. So far I am very pleased with them and I think they are a steal on sale in the Bargain Cave at $12.95. Here is the link if anyone is interested: http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link....tt=portage&noImage=0

This is part of my question. I am headed to RSA July 20, first in the Eastern Cape then Limpopo, should I think about shorts or just pants? How cold will it be? I meant to be DSC Member...bad typing skills. Marcus Cady DRSS

This is a question out of ignorance. Aren't there a lot a thorns that would make shorts a very painful choice? I've often wondered about this when viewing the pictures from Africa. Here in Western Wash one wouldn't want to go far off the road with shorts!

Yes, if you are in a thorny area (and Africa is full of thorns), your legs can get scratched up pretty badly wearing shorts. On the other hand, if you wear long pants, you are constantly hanging up in the thorns, and spend a lot of time extricating yourself, and often fall behind. If it is hot, I like to wear shorts, scratched legs be damned... DCS, it will probably be cold wearing shorts on the car in the morning, but pleasant in the daytime. - mike ********************* The rifle is a noble weapon... DCS, The Eastern Cape may well be coolish in July, though Limpopo is probably a little warmer. As mho notes, mornings will be chilly anywhere with shorts. You might want to check with your outfitters regarding likely temps, they do get snow in some areas of the Eastern Cape. See also the weather forecasts.

In the mornings and evenings it can get down right chilly, in the 30's. But in the afternoons it can get pretty warm. Best is to dress in layers so you can take them off as it warms up. Good Hunting,

I prefer the 5 inch inseam version. It is still a great price, and they fit the old fat man! Rusty We Band of Brothers! DRSS, NRA & SCI Life Member "I am rejoiced at my fate. I have used the Cabela's cotton fatigue shorts and they are just about the perfect weight and length. They do not have the outside cargo pocket and are a 6" inseam I believe. "Cleverly disguised as a responsible adult."

Sweet! Please post a pic of you in them shorts. (I believe I am too modest for 5-inchers. And chicken legs like mine don't do them much justice. I do draw the line with shorts with no longer than 7" inseam. The present fad of these long shorts/bloomers ... they are just too dang hot for me.) ------------------------------- Will Stewart / Once you've been amongst them, there is no such thing as too much gun. --------------------------------------- and, God Bless John Wayne. Thanks for the heads-up. Ordered two pair in dark khaki. Always hunt in shorts: it's quieter - skin makes no noise when thorns rip it and, once the sun is up shorts are cooler. Means a little chilly until about 0830. Just take a coat/blanket to keep legs warm in the open vehicle in the morning. Regards

Actually PRW, lots of folks prefer shorts. I almost always wear them unless I am in an area where the ticks are really bad or I'm chasing leopard hounds flat-out cross-country. They are quieter in the brush, too. Of course, I only have over 400 hunting days in Africa, so what do I know.

Actually it just depends on the time of year and where you are. I always wear shorts but usually need sweats over them in the morning and at night in the Cruiser. But it's usually the Zambezi valley where there are thorns but not all that many like SA. ------------------------------- Will Stewart / Once you've been amongst them, there is no such thing as too much gun. --------------------------------------- and, God Bless John Wayne. Never will I wear shorts on safari. Too many bugs and thorns in the bush, not enough blood in my body, and too much brain in my head. Mike Wilderness is my cathedral, and hunting is my prayer.

Don't wear them in the Selous in September. You'll fry your legs.

I have to agree with Mike. There are just too many things that snag, rip, stick or bite in Africa for me to wear shorts. One mis-step into buffalo bean and you'll wish you never heard of shorts. I'm sorry but the 5" inseam just won't work because I wear boxers. Do they have the 9" inseam? ideal solution- pants with zip off legs. it is all i take on safari and is the ideal solution. longs pants in the early morning , legs come off about 10 AM and go back on about 5 PM. in these days of tighter restrictions on baggage weight, it shaves several pounds off your luggage and simpliflies your packing Vote Trump- Putin’s best friend… To quote a former AND CURRENT Trumpiteer - DUMP TRUMP

I hunted in Zimbabwe-Rhodesia and Namibia for ten days each. I wore long pants. The PHs wore shorts. I asked one why? His response was that you pay more attention WHERE you put your legs. 'Made sense to me! I hunt south texas and in warm weather and wear shorts. I get a few more scratches, but less cactus than my friends that don't. capt david "It's not how hard you hit 'em, it's where you hit 'em."
