I thought I'd check out the www.wikipedia.com page on SCI and see what somebody may have written about the organization. I found a mostly objective article, but then came to a heading labeled "Endangered Species" and found this:

quote:
SCI supports the hunting of endangered species, including the cheetah and the critically endangered black rhino.[16]

SCI went to court in support of hunting endangered antelope in high-fenced hunts.[17]

Hmmm, perhaps technically true, but not the full story. I went ahead and did a modicum of research and added to the article. It now reads as follows. Take note that for some reason it won't allow me to break my edit up into paragraphs:

quote:
SCI supports the hunting of endangered species, including the cheetah and the critically endangered black rhino.[16]

SCI went to court in support of hunting endangered antelope in high-fenced hunts.[17] SCI contends that the revenues generated from hunting older specimens of endangered species, which are beyond breeding age, allows the funding of conservation projects such as habitat re-establishment and anti-poaching efforts. These efforts, funded by hunter's dollars, ultimately benefit the species. SCI often illustrates this by contrasting the management of elephant herds in Kenya with those of Botswana and Zimbabwe. Following the rapid decline of elephant populations over 1.3 million in 1979 to less than 600,000 in 1989 due to rampant poaching, the Kenyan government bowed to pressure from anti-hunting groups and banned the hunting of elephant. Continued poaching in Kenya has driven the population from 150,000 at the time of the ban to 6,000 today. Botswana and Zimbabwe elected to allow the sport hunting of elephants. Money brought to local economies by hunters seeking trophy elephants increased the economic value of the animals to local populations. Meat from hunted elephants also was used to feed impoverished villages. Revenue generated from trophy fees by the government was used to establish anti-poaching operations. Since the implementation of a trophy hunting program in Botswana, the elephant population there has quadrupled. SCI also points out that Zimbabwe implemented a similar strategy in 1980. Subsequently their elephant population has increased from 40,000 to 88,000. [18]

There are lots of things wrong with the Wikipedia page on SCI. For example, it has me incorrectly listed as a past president of the club. I tried to correct it, but have been unable to do so. I've watched the page over the past year and it is obvious that SCI needs to monitor it, edit it, and contribute to it. Anti-hunters keep adding snippets to make the club and all hunters look bad, including the two examples you cited.

Funny you should mention that. Actually in the half-hour since I modified the article somebody has snipped out my section.

Funny thing is, I actually started that article. I didn't have the time nor the historical background to keep it up or elaborate on it. I knew that it would be a magnet for the antis, but it's mostly kept up and been fairly objective.

They guy that reverted my edit actually sent me a note on Wikipedia. He said that he'll need cites from a reliable news agency like CNN (how reliable and objective are they?) or some sort of scientific journal. I dunno where to find that.

The stuff I posted is true, isn't it? Maybe a few of us can chip in and find some citations that will "stick"?

Go to the Talk Page ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Safari_Club_International ) and ask the question there.

I would argue that if independent "reliable" new source is required, then any information on the page that references HSUS or it's ilk should be removed.

I don't believe that here is a this requirement.
